the extra room seats wouldn't be fair because they would have better seats it would be like how white people got better seats on buses in the 60s

If you sit next to an obese person, make sure you keep the arm rest down when they get on. Then they have to squeeze into their seat and not take up half of yours. It may sound mean, but you paid for your seat and should get all of it. This happened to my husband, who is a big man, in no way obese, but he needs his whole seat! I don't know what the airlines should do about this, its obviously a very sensitive subject. But a person who paid for a whole seat should not have to share it!

Actually, if the person is unable to sit within the armrest room of the seat, they are supposed to buy two seats, or a first class seat. You should not have been put in this position. Someone on your flight crew should have noticed the issue and dealt with it before the aircraft left the gate. If this ever happens again, do not be shy! Go talk to a member of the flight crew and explain the problem. You paid for a specific amount of space on the aircraft, and airline policy says you are entitled to it.

You should have demanded to have your seat space before the flight departed. You paid for the 17" of width in your seat and are entitled to all of it, including half of the armrest.

Just because someone is obese, it doesn't give them the right to sit on or all over you.

Next time this happens, stand up for yourself. Tell the lead flight attendant that you do not feel safe next to a person of that size in the event of an emergency evacuation.

It is the airline's responsibility to ensure the safety of all passengers. If you can't get out of your seat in an emergency, you're not safe. Period.

Be discreet, yet firm. Stand your ground. This is a huge issue (no pun intended).

It should have been caught by one of the station agents.. They are responsible for insuring that the airline can accommodates their needs . If the person can not be accommodated by the space provided they will have to purchase the seat next to them or be upgrade to a class with larger seats(most times this is the what happends... its less offensive). But if the flight is booked the person will be asked to deplane.

Let them buy two tickets so they have to use two seats. To me the real danger is their lack of mobility in an aerial emergency. I've heard there is a ferry service in the Seattle area which measures you. Rather like the device used to check the dimensions of carry-on luggage with the airlines. If you exceed the stated dimensions of the seat on the ferry as measured by that device, you can't board the ferry.

I believe many airlines have started charging for 2 seats if the flight is full. If it's not, then they will simply sit them where there is nobody next to them, or where they have a row to themselves.

Honestly I see both sides of this, while it's not entirely fair that one person should have to pay more than another to fly, it's also not fair for someone who paid for a seat to have to give half of it up to the person sitting next to them.

Maybe the airlines should make more accommodations for people with different physical problems.
Perhaps a couple of rows should be set up for obese people giving them the correct amount of space ?
Just a thought.
