I'm not looking for jokes for answers here. I'm 28 yrs old, female and EXTREMELY forgetful and get confused easily. I have a high IQ (142) so I know I'm not slow.

For example... two nights ago, while on my way home from a family members home, my car started making ticking noises. I pulled over and decided to pop open the hood to try to determine the culprit. ( no, I was not panicing either).... anyways, I've popped my hood numerous times b4 and never had issues. Well, this time I did. I couldn't figure out how to open it! I forgot all about the hood release button in the car! The following day, I took the car by my Dad to see if he could figure out the noise (which ended up being something wrong with a blower) and to see if he could figure out how to open the hood. He then pointed out the hood release! How could I forget this?

I also forget when people do things. An example... EVERY night I forget when my hubby kisses me goodnight...whats wrong with me? Any suggestions?

I'm going to weigh in here and agree strongly with the answer given by 69cherokee. As a 28 year old woman, it is hoped that your health is fairly good, and a pattern of short term memory loss inidcates some form of contributing factor.

If you were to see me in my practice, I would strongly urge you to have a complete physical exam. It is possible that sleep deprivation is also impacting your memory, and that may be due to a physical/medical issue.

There also may be thyroid related problems, and the possiblity of something to do with your metabolizing of sugar. This could indicate hypoglycemia or diabetes.

After a thorough physial check, you may want to visit a therapist to work on issues which may be leading to a stress response. To help deal with this you need to look at the following areas of your life:

REDS
Rest
Exercise
Diet
Spirit

If there are deficits in any of these areas, you will be prone to the tensions of life producing a stress response. You may be thinking so much (worry/anxiety) about things, it makes recall of certain things less of a priority for your brain - hence you "forget".

When you get down to the base of it, we don't forget things, but rather we have problems in the recall of information.

It is a problem that is causing you distress, AND there is an answer. Start first at the physical and if all is okay, then look at your emotional/mental health. I wish you the best.

There can me a number of reasons for memory loss. First you have to answer the obvious questions Do you or have you used drugs in more than a recreational capacity? If so, unfortunately that's a common side effect.

Do you have any other symptoms you may not be looking at such as dizziness, dry mouth, slight loss of hearing? If so, you could have vertigo or another nervous disorder.

Also, do you sleep through the night without waking up? Could you possibly have a sleep apnea?

Don't be afraid to get this checked out. There are about 1000 illnesses that's side effect is memory loss.

This could be a number of things. You really should see a doctor who can run tests just to be sure there is nothing seriously medically wrong, like a brain tumor or something. Other possibilities are not enough sleep, not enough vitamins and minerals, depression, stress, or some really big issue in your life that has you seriously distracted mentally. In any event, unless it is something like an inoperable brain tumor, the rest of the possibilities are easy to remedy. But still, talk to your doctor first to be sure where you stand medically, and he can maybe help you with the other possibilities as well.

In some parts of your brain you can be very smart thus the IQ being 142... you took an IQ test am i right? did the IQ test cover how to open the hood of a car? i doubt it... in otherwords you can be smart with academics, puzzles, and riddles... doesnt mean you can remember things all that well.... if your really concerned tell a doctor but personally i think you just forgot O_O

I am tending to go along with your idea about lack of sleep. Over time this can do a number on someone. Do you unwind at bedtime? Do some activities that help make you tired before you go to bed. Read a dull book. Don't go to bed until you think you will go to sleep. I hope if you get more sleep you will feel better. Good Luck

You sound like me sometimes. Too much free time but I've figured out a way to help with my forgetfulness. I don't have a high IQ but I know I'm no dummy. I do mind exercises and I don't force myself to do them either. It can be as easy as recalling little things that happened in your childhood. Or say like think of your wedding day and try to recall the little things that happened. It sounds stupid but it seems like to me that the more you try to keep your mind active that you don't forget things. At least it works for me.

We have a friend with a high IQ. She may not be fully aware of her car or her driving, as her mind is elsewhere, occupied with some form of high math equation.

Consider working with a therapist for a few sessions, learning and exercising techniques to focus your mind on the here and now. Carry pen and paper in your pocket if necessary.

Stress can really play a part in memory. Have you had any other symptoms? The other thing that comes to mind is hormonal disorders. I would suggest going to the doctor to be on the safe side. Take care and good luck~

First, I am sorry to hear that you are having such problems. You should see a Neurologist. It may be chemical. You do not mention any other medical conditions, but realize that most medicines have side effects. Also there is a link between Anesthesia and Memory problems. It is also possible that you are giving your self (subconscious) permission to be forgetful.

Good luck.

Train your brain. You have stinking - thinking. When the girls come in from Hollywood immediately think of your research or what you should be studying and get into a book immediately. Also guard your eyes and your brain wouldn't think so much.
