Hi. Terrific question and WELCOME to the world of becoming a SHELTIE owner!
I have 4 of the little dears and have owned 6 in my lifetime.
Shelties (aka Shetland Sheepdogs) are a herding breed and were raised in the Scottish Isles. They are BEAUTIFUL and super INTELLIGENT and super EASY TO TRAIN.
The breeder I use is located in Georgia, and yes, she ships her Shelties all over the United States. Her web site is:
www.myshelties.com Her name is Becky and her husband is Ed. Both are terrific and have so much knowledge about the sheltie. We have purchased four from them, so you know that I love her and her shelties! :-)
Take a look at her site and she has a ton of links that you can click on and it will give you tons of information that you are seeking. Good luck and hope you find the SHELTIE of your dreams. Please let me know if you get a wonderful sheltie from her too. Many blessings, patti

When i was a baby just born till 10 i had a beautiful shelti dog. I used to haass the dog and watever else a 0-7 year old could possible toture a dog. lol and it was very paticene and never bit me. =D those only down side to the breed would be shedding and they tend to be shy toward strangers unless there aroudn them when little. They also then to bark alot and enjoy chasing cars since they are a herding dog so i suggest if u live by a busy highway/road be careful but they are nice compainion dogs.

Got to www.akc.org and they have lots of info, the parent club's info, the rescue groups and a breeder list. Be sure to check out a breeder if you get a pup, many turn out to be nervous fear biters. Rescues usually have older pups and adults so you know what you are getting. There is a good book, Successful Dog Adoption, that has a good section on temperment testing your new dog.

The herding instinct continues to be solid in lots of Shelties. They like to chase issues, which incorporate squirrels, geese, and young ones. while everybody is milling around the backyard, Shelties sometimes attempt to "herd" the persons right into a team by way of working around, barking, and nipping at heels. This tendency looks maximum while babies run around the backyard in a team. Shelties like to run in huge-open aspects. the area must be risk-free and that they ought to no longer get too some distance away. Shelties in lots of cases like to play. They do superb with a mushy, yet company, proprietor. The Sheltie is, exceptionally, an clever herder and likes to be stored busy, besides the undeniable fact that their pastime point in lots of cases coincides with their proprietor's point. Shelties are additionally notably intelligent, making them notably trainable. Shelties are very stable with babies. they are sometimes flawed for collies, yet there's a great distinction: the shetland sheepdog is a lot shorter.
