Sounds like a hair ball. Is he also looking like he's about to vomit?

Everyone is saying "take him to the vet", and that is EXACTLY the right answer. It could be that he's swallowed some string, rubberband, needle, or something else that's stuck in his throat. If you can't see down his throat, and I know cats don't like to have someone do this, it's imperative that a vet look in there with the right "equipment". Also, he/she will have someone else available to help hold, or they might want to give the cat something to calm him down, while they look. Good luck......

Take him to the vet at once.
Some years ago I noticed my big orange tabby doing something similar. He had swallowed a large piece of bone which was stuck across his throat, not enough to asphyxiate him but it was wedged and would not move up or down.
Luckily I could see it and was able to remove it with my finger.
I think it is highly possible your cat has something stuck in his throat. Whatever it is, he is obviously in pain and needs help.
Please don't wait. Good luck.

Time for a visit to the vet. He may have a tooth infection, or he could have a cut or sore inside his mouth, or even a bug bite.
He may have even had a stroke and the feeling on that side of his mouth is messed up.
Good luck, hope he gets better soon.

My cat did this about two years ago and one of her four fangs was very loose and almost sideways in her mouth, and she kept clawing at it so i called the vet and they said there was nothing they could do about it. She eventually lost all four of her fangs but each time she clawed at her teeth. I don't know if this is the same problem you have but you could check her fangs to see if there loose.

If it were my cat, I wouldn't take the time to ask non-professionals on yahoo-answers, I would be looking in the phone book for an emergency vet and get my beloved pet there as quickly as possible.

MY KITTY HAS THAT. We had 3 vets to look at him and our current vet knows. His mouth was so bad, it was raw like ground beef. It's a sort of mouth infection. He has been on anti-biotics and he will have to go in surgery to get his infected teeth out

He's probably either got a bad tooth, or some foreign body stuck up there. Take him to a vet.

Sounds like there is something stuck in his mouth or he ate something very bad tasting. Check out his mouth.

Please! Don't hesitate, take your cat to a vet asap!! Even if you don't think you can afford it, if you love this cat you will do it as you would for your own child or yourself. This cat depends on you to take care of it.
