I am trying to find a pretty strong pair of nunchucks and I was wondering if an aluminum pair of nunchucks is very strong, or what. From what I understand, airplanes are made out of aluminum, and the metal is light. But is it also incredibly strong? If not, where can I get a nunchuck made out of real strong metal?

Thanks John for the proper spelling, Nunchuku...

Yes, aluminum is lightweight, strong and will do less damage to a new user of the weapon, but too light without weighting as proper weight is necessary to get the right feel of it.

If you are new to the nunchuku, please try foam padded ones first. You miss once and any other type will rap you a good one in the b@lls or the head.

Most nunchuku that you see in the magazines are mediocre and good ones are increasingly harder to buy or find. A good set will have the neck and holes smooth like class so that cords don't wear excessively and break. Also good wooden ones are made out of exotic hardwoods like Teak, Purple heart, Mahogany, Ironwood and other close grain hardwoods.

While aluminum might be strong it is to light unless weighted. Aluminum and some other types of metal ones come weighted in the ends for this reason. This way they do more damage on a straight out, snap strike when you strike with the end of the weapon. A good one will put a hole about the size of a quarter in the thinner parts of your skull with this strike in the proper hands. They also tend to do more damage on the swinging and flailing strikes as well due to their greater weight and mass. Octagon shaped ones do more damage than rounded ones also. Do some shopping and based on their price and description you may find a good set that you like that is right for you and what it is you are wanting them for.

I've been using, collecting, and studying nunchucks for 18 years and your best bet is to get the wood because the aluminum will bend and rust and even break. True the wood ones will break too but they will not rust or bend. Also from my experience get nunchucks with a chain and not a cord because the cord breaks when used to much and the chain keeps going. If the chain rusts just add WD40 and your good to go.

Aluminium tends to get out of shape after hitting it a few times on someones head. Mine's dented. I find weighted rattan nunchucks the best.

The aluminum will be fine.

More important than the chuck material is the material that connects the two pieces. Chain is popular but noisy and slower than other materials and usually not repairable. Steel cable is sometimes seen but it lacks flexibility and is also usually not repairable. Parachute cord is quiet, fast and can be replaced when worn or broken. Leather tends to stretch.

Aluminum can still do damage. Just think of an aluminum baseball bat. It is all about the skill too.
