Okay I'm going to start off my saying that I know how horrible this sounds but honestly, if you have never experienced an 80 pound lab jumping up on a 3 year old little boy and knocking him over onto a hardwood floor, you have no idea how bad the problem really is. So there's two ways you can do this. The first way is to let him jump on you and once he's up knee him in the chest, not hard enough to hurt him but hard enough that he knows you mean business. Tell him no in a firm voice and make sure he knows that you will do this every time he jumps. You should only have to do it a couple of times to get him to behave. This will stop him from doing it to you but you need to get a few friends or relitives who aren't afraid of big dogs and have them do the same when they come over. The other way is to allow them to jump once and once they are up, turn away from them. They will slide off. Then, ignore them for a minute or two. Once they calm down, make him sit and stay or lay down. Pet him, give him a treat, whatever, just give him positive attention for positive behavior. You will once again want some friends to repeat this with your dog but he should learn quickly. My dog hardly ever jumps anymore unless grandpa comes over because he knows grandpa will let him get away with it. Good luck.

When the dog jumps up grab his paws and don't let go till the dog goes frantic and wimpers then let his paws go. The next time he jumps you do the same thing till he gets it. The dog will learn that there is a consequence to his jumping and feeling that discomfort is not worth the act of jumping up. If just holding his paws does not cause him any discomfort try twisting his paws slighly until he whines. This method has always worked for me.

THIS WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM: A dog jumps up to get a reaction from u. even a negative reaction such as u saying 'down' will stil b positive to him cos he has ur attention. the way to do it is wen he jumps up, turn away from him in silence and fold ur arms and dont even look at him. ignore him completely. u may have to stand there for a few mins but eventually he'l stop and sit down somewhere. wen he does, go over and bend down to his level and reward him with praise and tickles. it works wonders. u must b consistent tho and tel others to do the same.he'll soon learn that sittin down nicely gets ur attentiona dn jumpin up gets absolutely nothing. hope this helps. x

An obedience trainer helped my sister with her lab pup. She and her husband had to ignore the dog for at least 5 minutes every time they came in the door and only give him attention once he calmed down. Surprisingly it worked. But her husband was also very strict with him.

Put him on a leash so you have control. Teach him to sit. He can't be sitting and jumping at the same time. Be very consistent and praise him/give a treat when he is doing well. Lots of practice and patience!
