Where I work, you kinda just get stuck with one. I love what I do and enjoy sharing it with someone, BUT there was a time I had a crazy woman stabbing herself with a screwdriver and I had a 17 year old ride along with me. Needless to say you now have 3 people to protect. Yourself, the civilian and the crazy person. It can be difficult. I have had some of the "older" ones who are friends with the "boss" and it can be nerve wracking because you feel like they are spies even if you aren't doing anything wrong. I think it is a good practice more or less, I just feel the person should be an adult and in good enough physical condition not to be a total hindrance.

The option to decide whether to have observers probably depends on the department you work for. I would expect supervisors to try to place any ride-alongs with officers that did not hate them whenever possible. I'm sure there are officers that don't mind them in most cases. The reason for the ride along is another factor to consider. Someone that wanted to become an officer would be different than someone from a group that believed all officers were corrupt.

If you know the person doing the ride along, you can have them come with you. Other times they can be assigned by the sergeant.

It depends who the ride along is. Sitting next to someone for eight hours could be great or could be horrible, depending on the personality of the other person!

As for someone watching what we do...GREAT! That way they can see how things really are and they can spread the good word to all of their friends.....

I like having them. Its my chance to show people what we do on a daily basis.

It helps to break them out of the "Stupid cops, just sucking up all my tax dollars to eat donuts and harass good people." mindset.

I love it when the ridealongs are getting upset with me for not making profile stops (on their own race)...HAHAHHA. I explain why we do not, and cannot do them, and they say things like, "Bull ****, its good stop, I know hes dirty."
