I don't think that you as a waiter should be responsible for the cost of the meal when a dine n dash occurs at one of your tables. No it's not fair. I understand your frustration. I know how hard waiters and waitresses work, how demanding people can be, standing on your feet all day. I don't think it was right for your boss to expect you to cover the patron's bill. You have no control over diners who do that, therefore, it's not up to you to compensate the owner. He's fully aware that a certain percentage of people are going to dine n dash. If every diner at your station, took off without paying, it's absurd and ridiculous to expect you to compensate the owner. If it happens again, you might want to look for another job.

Not sure about waiters etc but the majority of bus comapnies insist that their drivers provide the cash "float" in the morning (it's why a lot of them can't change notes first thing) and if at the end of the day they are down on their takings, they have to make up the difference out of their own pockets.
It certainly isn't fair, but I wouldn't like to argue about the legality of the issue.

This is definitely not fair, what I would advise you to do is talk to your boss. Tell him that it is simply not possible to serve and watch customers indoors and out. Let him know that unless there is a way for you to watch for non-payers outside and retrieve food from inside simutaneously, then this is not your fault. In regards to this being lawful, I don't think it's worth any allegations, perhaps speak to him first.

Hi
No this is not legal, look at your contract of employment, if you have not got one after 13 weeks employment your boss is in the Shi##"t as far as the law is concerned. It is not up to you to stop defaulters and be put in danger, you are employed as a water not an enforcer. In fact your boss must ensure your safety at all times. your mate is taking the Pi##s out of you.
Just one moor thing, to take money from you for this would constitute an Illegal deduction of wage, you could take your employer to tribunal for this even while still working for the, and if thy where daft enough to sack you for this you would be Quids in.
I for got to add that if you have not worked for your employer for one year your rights are reduced, but in this instance the fault does not lie with you. If you are not in a UNION join one

If your contract of employment does not state that you are responsible for non paying clients, then he has no rights to demand recompense. If you do not have a contract of employment, then he is operating illegally and hasn't a leg to stand on. Confront him, if he does not withdraw the payment, then go to the industrial tribunal and claim the payment back plus damages, if he sacks you, sue him. These old time sharks are out of their depth in the real world of todays workers rights.

You should find out what the law is on this. surely if it was required by your job to leave the table for even a minute its not your responsibilty to prevent people from not paying and the owner is aat fault by having tables out side where you can not see it at all times. Im not sure who to contact but I dont think he can fire you if you refuse to pay and if he withhelds the money in your pay check then take him to petty claims court. Im sure a judge would sympatise with you

That don't sound legal and it is unfair because it is not your fault that the person ran off. You should complain to the head of Human Resources.

It's not legal to dock wages because of a walkoutl. How were you to know that they would walk out, especially if they were out of view?
Your boss is a nob jockey simple as.

You've made two mistakes.1.you should never pay your boss
for working for him.2. he's NO mate. Are you going to pay for his lack of security every time this happens? What's he going to do to make sure it dosen't?It's made me mad too, good luck.
