how do you fix a speedo in a 1992 nissan sentra any tricks or helpfull hints ?

we have a 1992 nissan sentra the speedo dont work or the odometer dont work nither one works any helpfull hints before i start digging ?

Pull the cable loose at the transmission and spin it between your fingers see if the spedo jumps a little might take a second observer. The gear in the transmission may be worn out or the instrument at the dash defective or just a cable.
