Of course it's OK to do this. Provided you are satisfied that no-one could break or sneak into the house (or that it would be extremely unlikely for anyone to be able to do so) and you are just in your back garden with your monitor, there should be no problem.

After my 2 year old daughter goes to bed at night, my husband and I sometimes go out into the garden to do some gardening. The doors, except the one in from the garden, are locked and the garden has a lockable gate - and the garden is not very big. We also have a monitor - our neighbours are often treated to my daughter singing herself to sleep!

Don't let the panic merchants scare you out of doing something perfectly safe.

Oh oh oh oh a very sensitive issue for me. I NEVER EVER get distracted from my children. I will never leave my kids in any place that is not under my full control. If they are asleep in their rooms I would NEVER leave the house. It is not only dangerous but illegal too. I don't know where you are from, but do a search on the net for the name Madeleine McCann. She is a 4 yr old little girl who was snatched from her bed room while her parents went for a romantic meal in a restaurant across the street. Nobody knows who took her or where she is. She disappeared 104 days ago. A few years ago two kids were playing in their bedroom while the rest of the family were downstairs. One of the kids strangled himself, hanged himself by accident with a scarf whilst playing with the other kid. The more you love your kids the more precautions you should take. The McCann parents will have to leave with thier fatal mistake for the rest of their lives. GOD WHAT A NIGHTMARE !!!

I know alot of people do this but i would be leery as it only takes a few seconds to minutes for something to go wrong. I know it sounds extreme but if you do make sure all the windows in house are locked so as when you are in the backyard someone is not going through in open window. Before you think i am extreme on child safety look up how many children have come up missing that way or how many people get attacked reentering from thier backyards.

The choice is yours it depends a lot on how old the children are. Anything much under say around 6 yrs old is debatable. Is is really worth it for one barbecue? Think: could you live with yourself if anything happened to one of them?

Have you seen in the news about that 4 yr old British girl on holiday in Portugal? Her parents went to eat, could see the door of their apartment from where they were apparently, and she's been abducted. Still not been found.

I know its unlikely your children will be abducted but accidents do happen....

Yes there is nothing wrong with it at all. Its not like your leaving the house. I have done this with my kids I just make sure the front door is locked and of course check on the every so often.

the Mccanns thought it was ok look what happened to them. if its yr own back garden and ur sure that theres no chance of anyone getting in the house and u have the baby monitor on then should be ok, but be very careful, the agony of something happening to your babies is not worth the risk, use yr judgment and be careful.

It's perfectly ok to sit in the garden while your daughter sleeps, go easy on yourself and enjoy the sunshine-while it's still here!

'Out the back', meaning your own back garden? Then yes. You will hear them with the baby monitor. But I would still check on them regularly too.

Of course you can. There is no law against it.You sound as if you would take all necessary precautions and are sensible so enjoy yourself.Don't compare your situation to the M'Cann case as there is no comparrison.
