Girls from that particular country tend to cover their skin for religious reasons. For them, showing their skin is very disrespectful especially that their women, compared to men.

What they wear depends on just how deep their regelious beliefs are and also how americanized they also have become if they live in America. I've seen some of them actually in slacks and others are in their complete native dress, but that is true of all nationalities. I live in a predominantly dutch community and some of them still wear their wooden shoes and 3 cornered hats year around while others don't wear them except for festivals. The same is also true with our First Nation's People, the American Indians. Some still wear their entire garments and headresses and others are in cowboy jeans and cowboy hats or simply regular everyday american clothes. I've even seen some American Indians in buisness suits. I think depends on each person and how they feel. We need to respect them all whatever way they dress because that is what America is all about.

The***PRAYNOGRAPHER***has pondered this question, and here are his thoughts. It is the teaching of the Islamic religion. A religion led by men. A ruthless violent religion. It uses force to the point of death if not followed by strict adherence. They probably have to beat their woman sometime to keep them in line.
Not to long ago a young lady of seventeen was stoned to death for merely falling in love with a non Muslim. This happened while onlookers walked by, and just watched. Even encouraged the stoning. Islam is a sick perverted religion run by sick men that do not want others to see that they must beat their wives. It is a religion that condones domestic violence perpetrated on the female. Hard to see bruises when you are all covered up. The***PRAYNOGRAPHER***maybe wrong, but I think not. In the past most religions were violent, but many evolved into the twentieth century, and had to obey laws that restricted violence on the unwilling, or free thinking.Chalk one up for evolution. Maybe someday they too will evolve into the 21st century

It may be a result of the caste system in India.
Darker skinned people are generally considered laborers and lower in status. Someone who works in the fields will get more sun and have darker skin as a result. In some families dark skin frowned upon so children are encouraged to cover up.

My best friend is Indian and I can say with 100% certainty that the Indian culture does not prefer its women to 'cover up'. While they do dress more modestly than American or British girls, I think this is more their modest culture than a social lifestyle choice.

Uh....have you ever heard of belly dancers?
She's probably Islamic, not just Indian...and yes, they dress modestly. If she isn't Islam, maybe her parents don't want their daughter looking like a 2 bit tramp?

Well, it depends. Usually, around other indians who are more traditonal it is more frowned upon. However, these days it doesn't really matter as long as its appropriate and not skimpy.
