Agreed that this is often a knee jerk reaction to public fears.
How do you get people to stop breeding dogs from aggressive lines? This includes everything from cocker spaniels and chihuhuas to the various pit bulls types.
Why do people continue to breed dogs that are poor examples of canine behavior? It is not just the new owners of puppies who are always to blame. There are really strong genetic factors at play here.
Breeders and prospective owners understand (sometimes) about getting hips and eyes checked in the parents. How do you get breeders and owners to check for aggressive temperament?
There are some puppies that are such natural fighters that they have to be removed from their own litters before they cause harm. This is long before they end up in a new home.
Unless you have a dog that is, say, guarding livestock from coyotes for a living, what in the world does anyone need an aggressive dog for?

Yes I understand, it is what I have been preaching to everyone who says yes to pitbull bans. Once one breed is allowed to be banned, it will open the door to any and every breed til eventually, owning a dog will be illegal.
Once again wake up people and start putting the blame where it belongs, that is with irresponsible owners, not a particular breed.
Punish the deed not the breed.

I do know that is NOT just the Bully breeds. I have 2 Dobermans and they are too included. But when I called the Animal Contol in my area they said the dogs with the most bites were Spaniels, and numerous toy breeds one jumped to their mind saying toy poodles. How I feel there is no such thing as a bad child nor is there such a thing as a bad dog it's how they are raised with the occasional fluke that some breeding can cause.

Heck and all the 'looks like it might be a pitbull or rottie mix' "it's the owner's job to prove what mix their dog is' mentality is making it even worse.
So now in Ontario Canada if you want to buy a dog from the US or bring one in (maybe even just adopted) from another province if it looks like it might possibly be a pitbull, staffie, bulldog, etc mix then you CAN'T. Rotties are next.
Any mixed breed dog with rottie colouring could be said to be 'part rottie' then you can't have your dog.
If someone thinks your boxer mix looks like it might be a pit mix then - no dog. It's garbage and insanity.
My parents cocker spaniel is the nastiest dog I know. It is about 26lb and has bitten my brother so badly he needed stitches and me so badly I bled. Both of us it was on the face.I n my case I bent down to give her a kiss. Dogs are nasty- not breeds.

It's all about the animal activists i.e. PETA and the USHS (United States Humane Society) slowly chipping away pet owner's right to own pets. Eliminate a few breeds, then a few more, them make a weight restriction and on and on until they win and there are no more pets.

Thank you Mr. Vick and those of your same ilk.
What will it take to make people understand the issue is with the dog owners not the dogs?

I don't agree with BSL, but it seems easier to everyone to regulate the DOGS since we cannot seem to educate or regulate people.
