It is not true that the people of India adore cows. The Hindu people of India have a great respect for life which has to do with their understanding of faith. If there are Hindus on this site hopefully they may explain better. However I have been told that life is a journey for the Hindu people. If your life has not been good or complete you are reincarnated as an animal form. This may be a gnat, a cow, or a human. Thus as has been said, an animal including a cow may carry the spirit of an ancestor. The ultimate goal is to live a life that is worthy. Then death brings you into one with the spirit of the Hindu god.
Please understand that this is what I have understood from my studies and what I have been told. I hope that some Hindus will provide a better life.
Pastor John
Addendum: I did find a site that affirmed the beliefs above and labeled the animals and people that one returns as. It was interesting. But frankly I have enjoyed reading the sites that Sarah W has given. Her answer is much more accurate and well appreciated.

It is just like the Christians adoring the cross , despite its being an insturment of tortue and death just because Jeshs was killed on it , the Hindus worhip the cows as they were and are the ones that have beenfeeding he population with milk , butter and ghee in return for the tried grass and that people have beenoffeint othem.they ar franting a boon to humanity right from the ancient days .In the ancient past when people turned from carnivore to herbivore , the nutritious milk and the by products that the cows granted to humanity in reurn for the trash they offered was a boon. After all it is just because you believe that the God would grant something very great and adoravble in futur , though it has not yet beenproved , that you worship the god whom many deny even toiday.Such being the case what is wrong in the hindus worshipping the cows which has and is granting a concrete and proven boon of a nutritiouss food to man in return for not any money or obedience , but the grass that he offers ? It is very sensible and higly grateful a gesture .

Not always adoration... the cow provides so much for India. The milk and butter for ghee and the cow patties to use as fuel for heat and cooking and fertilizer and even for buildings...
I can tell, you have never been to India. It would be a good experience for you. I have a lot of repect for that culture. They are a lovely people.

Her milk is what people drink just like a child drinks his/hers mothers milk. If a child's mother is unavailable or has died, a cows milk will suffice. So a cow is also considered like a mother and adored. This is the main reason for not eating a cow.

It's not so much that (Asian) Indians adore cows, it's that anyone who practices hinduism adores cows. And many Asian Indians are hinduist.
I hope that helps.
It's like asking why Americans celebrate Christmas?

I adore cows, but I also eat meat. Cows are sacred in their country just like the Bald Eagle is here.

To answer this you have to understand Indian people and culture. Indian culture is one of the oldest in the world. In India everything that gives human essential things are treated as secred and god. Here the sun (surya dev), moon, air (pavan putra), trees(vruksha devta), mountains (goverdhan, pavagadh, palitana), rivers(ganga maiya), food grains(anna devta), the land (Dharti Mata), rain (megh devta), fire (agni devta) are treated as gods. These are the natural resources that help mankind. These are the things are abused in every way. Dont you think we should treat these as holy and our todays problem of polution can be solved very easily. Cow gives us milk. The cow-dung used to be as tiling in olden days, and as fuel for cooking food (gaurya), her urine is treated as anticeptics in india. So there is nothing wrong in adoring cows !!!!!!!

the same reason Jews don't eat pork and Muslims don't drink rules and regulation made by religion for control
for ex:if you're going to survive in the middle east(mostly desert) you can't drink alcohol(it would send you in coma due to lack of watter)and the fatter you eat the fatter you get (so pork is not recommended ) not the ideal thing to be in intense heat the same thing with India with such a big population you need a lot of milk so to kill a cow would be a crime
