I have to give my persian a dose of L-Lysine each day. I bought the tablets and have tried grinding them, smashing them, and lately letting them sit in a syringe overnight with water to dilute them. But they're grainy and my poor boy gages every time. Is there such a thing as liquid L-Lysine?

Get somthing that your cat likes to eat (peanut butter works like a charm) and grind the pill up and then either mix it in with peanut butter or try and cover it with peanut butter. Peanut butter is really sticky so you can easily open your cats mouth and stick it on the roof of his mouth. He should lick the peanut butter off in no time and you should be set.

I hope this helps it works every time i have to feed my cats pills and i hope it works for you- I wish you the best of luck!

Lysine does not come in a liquid form from the manufacture, however some pharmacies can compound drugs into an easily dispensable form. I would ask your veterinarian if there are any pharmacies he or she recommends and if they can get you a prescription.
You could try putting the ground tablets in something he would lap from the syringe like tuna juice. Cats have a VERY sensitive larynx and they will gag when anything is forced into their mouths, even if its something they would normally eat. Hope this helps.

The ONLY thing that works for my cat is a piller, she can hold a pill in her mouth forever if she wants to, then spit it out, and invariably she will start foaming at the mouth once the pill gets wet. With the piller I just put the end of it with the pill in the back of her throat and hit the lever, it goes right in, I've never missed with it. I have tried to give my cat pills disguised in food, even crushed up in food, but she's onto me, she knows it's there and refuses to eat it. Some meds have a real strong smell to cats. EDIT and I always wrap her in a towel first so she can't get away.

Ask your vet for a pill-giver (it's like a syringe with a grippy bit at the end) Theses are really great - you can get the pill right at the back of the mouth so they can't spit it out. I got one because I got sick of being bitten and scratched administering wormers to 13 cats !
Grind it up and mix it in favorite food - works for some but not others.
Liquid medicine - very messy, been there done that !

Get a piller (pill gun) from your vet... works like a charm :)

P.S. Torbaynewfs (another Newfie parent?!!) is absolutely correct. A compounding pharmacy will make L-Lysine into a liquid form (your vet will send a script to one), however, our clients usually have more problems will liquid. They never know how much their cat actually gets (so dossing is off) because the medicine usually ends up all over the cat.

I had trouble getting a daily thyroid pill down my Kinsey. The vet gave me a package of pill pockets and you wrap those treats around the pill. Kinsey thought he was getting a treat instead of a pill. Not often you can fool a cat!

Talk to the vet. They make a gel. You can also find a "compounding" pharmacy that can make you a liquid.

Heck Yeah!!!! Newfs RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The liquid can have it's own problems, I presonally like the gel..I get a tuna flavored one from the Cornell pharmacy and it very easy with my Siamese-From-Hell that does not like to be bothered with medication.

The cheese idea someone said is a good one. So is mixing it (ground up) with about a tablespoon of Tuna or wet food. Give this 'treat' before you give wet food so he wants it.

i have not heard of L-Lysine but when i needed to give my cat pills i just grabbed its head with my palm at the top of his head and stuck my fingers in the gaps in his teeth. he should open his mouth at which point i have the pill in my other hand and i drop it in his mouth. i then rub the bottom of his throat till he swallows
