the restaurant customers are 75% african american....I've been there for 3 years....I've always tried to remain non prejudice, but last night changed my outlook for good....during my employment, I've witnessed children being told to shut up, slapped (in the face or wherever) eat their food or else...one woman pointed a knife at her child and told him to "shut the f up" ....I've seen them dragged into the bathroom while they're screaming...parents arguing with they're children on cell phones loud enough for others to hear...and last night, all the little girl wanted was to sit by her mommy...daddy said no, she cried and he said "you're coming with me"...so outside they went...I said something to him as they were going outside and he said mind your damn business...I've also found dirty diapers, tampons, and a g string under the tables....servers complain about 100.00 tabs and getting 2.00 tips or no tip at all...so, if you're african american, please explain what I
should think.....

i think she didn't mean to trash about their race or color, etc, just wondered about that abnormal behavior, if it's kind of normal in cultural ways and if she came here and asked that on line that is surely because she's very surprised, i would too...a tampon, a panty?? but it's true people, no matter their color are treating their children like they were their enemies, too bad...about the mother pointing a knife to her kid, awfull, i know kids can make loose patience to anyone, but if you are a parent, you should behave yourself, 'cause kids are what they learn from their parents!

About the tips: I have no argument with that. I'm black and I know for a fact many black patrons don't take too well to tipping waitresses. I'll give you that. About the children, all I cn say is since you're primarily surrounded by black customers day in and day out, you're bound to see the good and the bad. Are you telling me you've never seen a well behaved black family or children? Or did you just want to focus on the bad stuff? I know several...And I can also say I've seen my share of caucasian children throw tantrums in stores, fall out on the ground, hit their parents, curse at their parents, and so on. So who's to say which is better parenting? Maybe you should try to notice the good and the bad in everybody, because every family (regardless of their race) has skeletons in their closet. But some people are better at hiding it.

Talk to your employer. You get charged taxes on a 20% tip whether you receive one or not. Ask your employer to simply add the gratuity to the bill. He might not do it for couples, but you could probably use logic (the point about the taxes) to at least get him to add it to parties of six or more. Ask if you can wear a tip button, such as "HIP TO TIP", my personal favorite. When people ask me about my button, I say it's my name tag. They always say it's an unusual name. I say, "Yeah, my Mom was gonna name me after my Grandma, but Dad thought I should have a classier name than Gimme A Tip. Naturally, being a mighty hunter, and a Native American, Dad's name is Ten Buck Tip." Then give them your best smile and ask if there will be anything else. They WILL laugh. Once you get them to laugh, you're going to get a tip. It may not be a huge one, but you'll get one. Also, studies have shown that waitresses who touch their customers lightly on the shoulder will get a larger tip than those who don't.
Another thing that's worked for me. I come walking over, shaking my head, muttering "I just can't believe that. No she didn't." Human curiosity being what it is, the customer will say,"What?" You say this: "Someone just told me that she was in a restaurant at a Holiday Inn. She had forgotten to leave anything for the waitress and the waitress just walked up to her and do you know what she said? She said "It is customary to leave a percentage of the bill as a tip for your waitress. All the best people do.""
Then you nod slowly and say, "You know, what she said was true, but I still don't know where she got the nerve to say it."
Then ask if there will be anything else.
The technique is called using content, because YOU didn't say it, you QUOTED someone saying it, but it goes in the customers' brains just like an order, and most of them DO tip when you do that. Even if you are confronted, you can HONESTLY say you were just repeating a story another customer told you, because this person asked you to.
Your tips will greatly improve.
Best wishes.

I'm British - may I venture an opinion?

LEAVE THAT JOB IMMEDIATELY AND WORK ELSEWHERE!

That is not a restaurant - that is a zoo!

And I am afraid that whoever, whatever behaved like that in my hearing or sight would get whatever I had on my tray at that moment in time - tipped right over their heads!

Surely you don't HAVE to work there? That is insane - I truly cannot imagine what sort of establishment that is.

My mind is truly boggled!

Please leave the asylum to the inmates - get out ASAP!

Good luck old friend - at least you know its wrong - GET OUT BEFORE YOU START ACCEPTING IT AS OK!

I can remember my mother going up side my head in a store once because I was miss behaving when I was small. And I never did it again. If my brother or sister acted out in public they got the same thing. I know it may seem wrong to some people but it taught us who the boss was. When ever I go shopping and see kids yelling back at their parents I think to myself if that was my mother she would have spank them right their. I saw a young kid hit his mother. His mother didn't open her mouth. If I had hit my mother like what I saw in the store she would have knocked me to the ground with no question asked. I agee with you about the trash some people leave behind that is tacky. And I feel if anyone runs up a 100.00 or more tabs they should know to give at lest 15% to 20% my feeling is if they can't then they should eat at home until they can.

I am not an African American, but, the little that I can add to your question is: All ethnic groups are as light is, they all are the same but as it passes through the prism it spans into individual spectrum of wavelengths (behaviors, traits, characteristics).

What this means is you find the same types of people in all ethnic groups, but, where there is heavy concentration of a specific ethnic group of/or a specific wavelength one can encounter specific behavior or community traits.

As for you being in this place... What do you think?

Okay to answer your question. Yeah I have seen alot of African Americans telling their kids to shut up. But still that just how people are brought up, not by race but by their enviorments and alot of African-Americans live in the same envioment, but take my freind who's african american never done that or like used that behavior so its not limited to race but your enviorment and where you live and grow up in and how your parents raise you its all the same with all races. Whites, Hispancis, blacks, Asians and everything else not by race but by your enviorment. It like like white people, everyone steroetypes tem as being rich and snotty and why because all most of their parents are rich and brough tthem up like that but it doesn't mean its for the entire race. It like everyone seems to think that all mexicans can tile floors, thats is a myth just the majority can by how their parents brought them up.

Oh and to all the people insulting her for this question.
SHUT THE HECK UP!
You've definatley insulted someone before about their race and had predjuices, so people that are calling he nasty names really you've done if before, no one has never caught you though, okay and don't deny it.

i live in a city thats primarily white .: White people are just as rude here as any other color, if not worse. Where I live white people are just as mean and horrible to their kids as any other...Remember, just because you see a family sitting together nicely at a table deosnt mean there isnt any abuse behind closed doors. Some do it in the open, some in private. Either way its terrible!! At least if its done in public you can call the authorities on them. I just cant believe how anyone could be abusive to a little child though, Its so sad. I definitely understand why you feel this way.

People only see what they choose to look for. I know for a fact that if you worked in a different place predominantly occupied by another category of people, white, black, christian, Jewish, Muslim, rich, poor, old, young, fat, thin, etc and you chose to look out only for those who didn't tip, had rowdy children, and were loud, you would find it. Quit focusing on negatives and look for positives, you might start to enjoy your job more, if not, quit. Life is what you make it.
