Thinking of buying a new or couple years old Ford Ranger. I'm looking for 4 liter 6 cylinder or 4 cylinder 2.3 - two wheel drive. Any pros and cons on this if you have one. Also any major problems to consider or look out for. I have a very very old Toyota and don't know much about the newer American trucks.
Thanks.

I own a 1990 Ranger 2 wheel drive stand cab. I bought new. It has the 2.3l 4 cyl. I'm on my second motor and have driven it from coast to coast . It has 318,000 on it and has been the best Ford truck I have owned. The 2.3l is a great engine but lacks the power. I suggest the 6cyl, and the extended cab Good Luck !!

Ford Ranger is a Mazda B-series, it doesn't matter who re-badged what since Ford owns Mazda. It is still Japanese, hate the term "American truck" I worked in a Ford dealer in the parts department, every part comes in a bag or box with a tag on it with the part # and where it is made, it is rare to see a part that is made in USA, most Ford parts are made anywhere From Brazil, China, Japan, Mexico, Canada and just about everywhere in between. Also S10's are made by Isuzu. Wish people would grow up and stop arguing over what company makes the best vehicle because having owned over 35 vehicle from all different companies all I can tell you is every company makes good ones and bad ones!
P.S. More in response to your question I have not heard of any recent issues with the Rangers, from all that I've heard they are a decent vehicle. I did hear of them having head gasket and head issues in the late 80's, early 90's but then that was almost 20 years ago now so think they would have dealt with that by now.

The 2.3l engine has been around a long time and is very reliable. I worked for Ford for 10 years any I know many techs, and they all agree the 2.3 is reliable.

if you want a mid-sized truck get a s-10. i love ford trucks but a s-10 is just better and parts seem cgeaper, since you want a older one you will have to work on it some time. If you got the money buy a f-150 i will never drive anything else!

the ranger is a nice little truck for daily commuting. i recommend the 4.0L V6 rather than the 2.3L I4 though. as for the ranger being a mazda, sorry guys you have that backwards, the mazda is a rebadged ranger. the courier was the rebadged mazda. like any vehicle, have the truck checked out by a qualified mechanic, and if it passes muster, and you like the truck, buy it.

avoid the 4cyl the mileage is worse than a 4.0 v6 due to haveing to work harder. rangers are very good vehicles. toyotas are also a very good truck. both will be less troublesome than dodges. my boss owns many dodges and frankly i work on them much more than my fords and aton more than any of the gms my family has owned.

the 4.0L V6 has a long history of problems none of witch are small (low oil pressure - cracked heads and many more). as for the 2.3L 4 CYL its good for about 160000 miles with little or no care .but the power in the 2.3 & 2.5 is higher up . they pull good around 3000 to 4800 RPM. so be ready to put your foot in it . even if you push it hard the 2.3 & 2.5 will get over 25MPG.

Ford are known for their trucks, they are durable, and have few mechanical problems.
I have been driving one for the last 7 years, and except for general maintenance, and a set of tires, I have had no problems.
