The original reason goes back to the Cold War security clearance process. Being a homosexual, having an excessive amount of debt, using drugs, or having an affair could be used a blackmail for US security secrets.
Today is a morals argument.

If you are a homosexual and you are in the military then it's best to keep it to yourself at least that's the way the military sees it. It's not that homosexuals aren't people it's that when you are and you go to a combat zone the people that you are with may not feel comfortable staying in a room with you. There is a family of retired marines that are sending a petition to the president that homosexuals should be able to be in the military.

The problem is one of unit cohesion and behavioral concerns.
There is a lot of tension between gay men and the rest of the unit, and it causes instability. When in the military, fraternization and sexuality becomes a concern where it would not in civilian life.
Personally, I think people should get over it, but I am not in charge of the military and I'm not going to make a political decision that could harm the military. Leave it up to the generals and the military leaders what rules they have, so long as it produces the results we want.
It is not so simplistic an issue that we can simply get a lawyer and force openly gay men to work together smoothly with the rest of their unit. The world is not perfect, and it does not match our ideals when we pass laws that seem good on paper and don't work out so well in practice.

There are several reasons. First of all, it is a health matter. Male homosexuals are at risk for contracting AIDS, Hepitis, among others. Secondly, sex between any soldiers tends to lower moral and cause discipline problems. And thirdly, and more importantly, they are a national security risk, as is anyone with a personal issue they don't want disclosed to the world. They can be blackmailed into giving intelligence to an agent, even if they are out of the closet. Finally, they are aren't allowed because the military says so. Bottom line, we serve in the military, not in a private institution, and our job is not to serve as a testbed for society. It is their decision how many high school dropouts to allow join, what misdemeanors to allow, and ultimately they decided a long time ago not to allow gays in.

why can't junkies process crack in a crack house?
SERIOUSLY though, gays shouldn't be under estimated THEY ARE VERY STRONG maybe because they always have to defend themselves. I think maybe the best housekeepers, cooks and warriors are gay. DO I WANT THEM IN THE MILITARY? I don't think so, in situations like the military and prisons it isn't only the gays that have to be watched it's the straights also, because NATURE is not too forgiving or too forgetful when someone is abruptly cut off from sex. THE URGE GOES ON unless the man is sick.
ACTUALLY, They have developed a chemical for warfare that when exploded or sprayed on the enemies, it will cause them to stop shooting and start having sex with each other..hehehe
GAYS like to believe that their situation is the same as blacks, that they are discriminated against. I could never see how the being BLACK and being gay COULD COMPARE, BUT if, by chance they both are the same then GAYS could do what BLACKS had to do when the military practiced open discrimination against blacks...and that HAVE A SECTION IN THE ARM FORCES WITH ONLY GAYS as in world war 1 and 2, BLACKS WERE SEPARATE FROM WHITES...like for instances THE BUFFALO SOLDIERS. HOMOSEXUALS COLD BE SEPARATE FROM HETEROSEXUALS and the problem would be solved.
Could anyone agree with that solution?
I GUESS Gone are the good days when men were men and was happy to have a woman and when women wanted to be dainty fragile women who only wanted big strong men or who only want men...weak or strong...........sigh

The textbook answer is that openly homosexual men and women are detrimental to the good order and discipline of a military unit. Although you may say it's the homophobe with the problem, not the gay person, the fact is that homosexuals comprise a minority base that is easier to exclude than to ascertain each "straight" military persons reactions to the presence of homosexuals in their unit.
The military took a conservative approach, which was the don't ask, don't tell policy that was initiated under President Clinton. What the person does in their off-duty time is their business up to the point that it affects the unit or it's mission.
Personally, I was in the Navy for 15 years and am not nearly so niave as to think that I haven't served with several homosexuals over the years and had my impressions that a few of the people that I served with were homosexual, but as the policy stated, I didn't ask and they didn't tell. All I was interested in was that my shipmate do his or her job and that we accomplished our assigned missions.
Now had my shipmate been openly homosexual, would I have been less comfortable using the head when he was around or showering or sleeping in the same berthing area, I can't say, it didn't come up. I would like to think that I am more evolved than that.
As far as "sticking the gay guy in with the women", you obviously have no clue as to peoples expectations of privacy. Most women I know would care less if the guy was gay or straight, if they have no interest in him, they don't want him to see them naked. And yes the same rules apply for lesbian women as for homosexual men.

Wow, VERY well thought out question and suggested alternatives. LOL!
Men are not allowed in the women's locker room because ... it's the opposite sex. The thinking being that EVEN if the man is happily married, he is more interested in checking out the women than doing whatever he's in there to do; e.g., get dressed! That same logic applies to an openly gay man in a locker room with men. The straight men KNOW that he isn't going to touch them--or he'll die! But they don't like the idea of him ... looking. Ogling. Etc.
It may suck--pun intended--but when gays come to terms with the fact that their "lifestyle" is aberrant AND an abomination in the eyes of God then maybe they will start to understand why the heterosexual community just doesn't feel the need to go the extra mile to accomodate their perversion.
It's a cross that they must bear.

They really want you to be pretty focused on surviving & winning encounters. Not too concerned with how much sex you get to have with uniformed men.
That being said there are some guys in the service that are pretty far out of the closet. They have lisp, legally changed their name to "Dick Rocks", stuff like that. When they get asked they just say "don't ask don't tell", and actually you can get in big trouble for asking. So they are basically protected.
That being said I think it's a good system. We don't keep gays out of the military. But from my own personal experience I would attempt to disuade any person from dating somebody they work with. Because it will affect your preformance at work & it is not worth it. In the military for many people a crappy day at works means somebody dies. Not good & not worth some physical pleasure.

I'll give you one real life situation from my days working mental health in the army, and you can try to generalize if you like. There was a soldier sent in for assessment because he had problems with hygeine, refusing to shower. Hygeine could be depression or schizophrenia (in general). Over time, the soldier did say that his problem was being homosexual, and worrying that if he got excited while showering with other soldiers, the other soldiers would do something bad to him.
Now, you may say "that's the other soldier's problem", and it could be, but soldiers have enough to worry about in time of war...and don't need even one more added stress while taking a shower...in my opinion. If it distracts soldiers from the mission, and it would, every attempt should be made to minimize the distraction.

They are allowed in the military if they don’t tell anyone that they are gay. The troops are afraid of taking showers with gays, at least that is what they say. What they fail to realize is that they have already taken showers with gays when they were in High School gym class!
Don't ask, don't tell; what a stupid policy! Let them serve their country you homophobes! As long as they behave, gays should be allowed to be in the military.
