an 870 express 12 gauge is an adaptable weapon that can be used for self defense, and hunting, depending on the barrel and accessories. I would go with a slug barrel, and a magazine extender , allowing you 8 rounds as opposed to 5. Attach a tactical light W/ pressure switch, and chamber some 3" 00 buck. should be plenty for protection.

I'm not sure about the law and age requirements in Texas, but if you're just looking for a home self defense weapon, for in the house, you can't beat a shotgun for close range work.
Now, a good choice to check on is a muzzle loading pistol, or as the call it, " a cap and ball, black powder" pistol.
They make some real nice shooting guns in .36 cal. and up to .44 cal, for under $200.00. Not only are they good weapons, but fun and cheap to shoot.
Check with your local state laws regaarding the age limit for these weapons. Also, this type of gun is normally not subject to all of the federal guns laws and registrations.

A good shot gun is hard to beat for self defense. 12 gauge pump or double. I love the double because while you are still jamming rounds into a pump I can have a double loaded and in your face. Make sure it's short barreled- 18 inch or longer. If you have a really soft heart, you can buy some bean bag or rubber ball rounds for your moms ex- boyfriends, after they get shot with one, you can bet they won't be back.

You can't beat a shotgun for self-defense. They will absolutely do the job. Buy the shortest you can find, and preferably an automatic or a pump. You ought to be able to find one for under $200. If you want a handgun, get your mother to buy one. I would recommend a .45 or .40 semiautomatic.
Good Luck!!!!!

A short (but still legal) shotgun's always nice. Put a laser sight on it. I know, it's a shotgun, but laser sights intimidate people even more than a gun, sometimes. And if you're out in the country, load slugs, and you have a hard-hitting precision weapon.
You might want to think about non-lethal options, as well. I'm a big fan of pepper spray.
Good luck!

It is a federal law in all states, you CANNOT purchase handguns, nor ammo for these guns, from an FFL dealer unless you are 21 and above. If you have someone 21 and over buy you the handgun and transfer it over to you, and the BATF finds out about it and has evidence to prove it, the person who does this act can go to the federal pokey. This is called a "straw transaction", an eligible person knowing buying a handgun for an ineligible person and then transferring it to him.

Buy a short barreled 12 gauge pump shotgun. 18 to 20 inches. Generally you can get a good used one for under 150 dollars...buy a box of birdshot.
When it's time to talk, talk...when it's time to shoot....shoot!

sounds like Mom needs to shop further up the food chain...
judging from all the answers, you best bet is a scattergun-
though I don't agree with Noah about bird shot...if you shoot,
you are attempting to stop someone from committing a life-threatening action. Go double ought and be done with it.
