I am going to Toronto and would like to know the current security status, I was told you are not allowed any hand luggage, no drinks or food?

Because of this my friend put his expensive camera in his main bags and because he did not have any locks it was stolen somewhere along customs, he put in right at the top.

I have locks on my bags anyway but would like to know can I take my camera with me or should I put it in my main suitcase? Thanx.

See the airport or the airline website the day before you travel.
Never put your camera in your case unless you have to, but I do not expect that to be needed any day soon. If told that you have to, ask why. (Someone here said there are airports banning bateries, [I have never seen it anounced anywhere else], in which case you can put those in your hold luggage and keep your camera with you.)
Besides the risk of loss there is the risk of damage. They do trow those cases with no care at all.
And check with the people at the check-in desk too, better safe than sorry.

The airport security in Toronto is similar to the US. You can have hand luggage and food - but any liquid must be less than 3 oz or bought after you go through security.

If you're worried about your camera, I'd keep it in your hand luggage.

Cheers.
