No, Fred Phelps is not a Christian. Whether he'll get into Heaven is between him and God, but he preaches a corrupted, evil perversion of the Gospel.
His theology divides God into two contradictory personalities, one that loves people and makes them good, and the other that hates people and makes them evil--all according to His whim. The two sides of his "God's" personality never go after the same person, so they aren't in conflict as they would be with true dualism; but nevertheless some characteristics of dualism are apparent. It is a blasphemous and false, nonchristian theology.
Edit: While Phelps claims to be preaching Calvinism, no true Calvinist I've ever known has made the leap from double-predestination to actually describing God as having two radically different personalities depending on whom He's dealing with. This matter of dual personalities and dual attitudes toward His creation divides humanity into the superior and the inferior, and makes it "okay" to actually persecute whole classes of persons.
Caveman: You're missing the point. Mr. Phelps doesn't merely preach Hell; he preaches a semi-dualistic view of God.

When did God start hating the sin without hating the sinner?
Is not this a catchphrase of recent vintage used by those who do not know God? And what he stands for?
Romans 6:23 For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord.
I know that Jesus told us to love our enemies, but we are certainly not supposed to make allowances for their sin.
Otherwise would we not be vulnerable to being influenced by their sin?
The fact that "Fred Phelps" allows are deliberately promotes his name, and the overt attacks against gays, is very revealing. Jesus never set the example of hatred that this hater Fred Phelps is guilty of. I would venture to guess that this guy, along with other mis-guided wannabe Christians are doing well in their efforts to drive more people away from the Bible than Satan could ever hope. I am sure they are making Satan very happy in their misrepresentation of the Christ in all manifestations.
Yet, as much as I would like to stop these fools, the Bible forewarned us that their would be many 'wolves in sheeps clothing" who would draw many people away from the truth, and my goodness, it is actually happening.

If you have a child and that child hits someone with a stick. You do not stop loving the child. But you are not happy with the action of hitting someone else. Sin is something that one commits and it is not counted against the sinner one they repent and get saved. Then the Lord forgives it. He always loved the sinner. John 3:16 (Amplified Bible) 16For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten ([a]unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.

Amen to this post! The Phelps family are dispicable and vile creatures run by the enemy to give nonbelievers an even greater reason to dis Christianity. I am upset these people get tax exampt status for pure hate. If I had a family member, be it someone gay or in the armed services killed by a roadside bomb, it would be very very hard to stay "Christian" if you know what I mean.

Like the fundamentalism he was trained by Fred would only regard your attempts to persecute him as vindication of the correctness of his doctrine.
"Before they hated you, they hated me." and so on.
One of the problems with Phelps and family is they have fully armed themselves with justification from the Bible and are bristling with law degrees.
So Yes Fred Phelps is a Christian, and likely in his mind he is one of the very few "True Christians" actually doing God's bidding.
His message is no different from what you heard out of Swaggart or Falwell, except that he is more offensive in his style.

‘Christ according to the faith, is the second person in the Trinity, the Father being the first and the holy Ghost the third. Each of these three persons is God. Christ is his own father and his own son. The Holy Ghost is neither father nor son, but both. The son was begotten by the father, but existed before he was begotten--just the same before as after. Christ is just as old as his father, and the father is just as young as his son. The Holy Ghost proceeded from the Father and Son, but was an equal to the Father and Son before he proceeded, that is to say before he existed, but he is of the same age as the other two. Nothing ever was, nothing ever can be more perfectly idiotic and absurd than the dogma of the Trinity.’

If I remember correctly, I think Jesus was supposed to have said, "He who has not sinned shall cast the first stone." Since Phelps focuses his hatred entirely on gays, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he had repressed homosexual tendencies.

I'm sure he believes he is doing a service to God, but God wouldn't approve of his message. He gives Christians a bad name by harrassing people at funerals. I believe we as Christians are to tell the truth, but in love.

Hello, you've got the Caveman here. We are currently living in times where everyone has to be careful and politically correct. So we are expected to bite our tongues and watch what we say as not to offend anyone. However, in all actuality in doing so we are crippling our society. Fact of the matter dear, is that no matter how nice a person is, if they don't acknowledge Christ as their Lord and personal Saviour they are going to hell. It is as simple as that!!!! People need to be told the truth whether they like it or not. Peace and God bless.
