You will need to contact an electrician to have them install an outlet in the floor for this purpose. The decorating magazines always so the furniture in the center of a room but never tell you of the expense to make it work. With out the outlets in the floor, your only other possibility is some sort of battery system. YOU CANNOT PUT LAMP CORDS UNDER THE CARPET, IT IS A FIRE HAZARD.

Not much options. Wall to wall carpet eh? It looks like you either are getting a new house or remodling. If you are PLANNING to get new carpet, think where everything will go and ask the installer to punch two holes (one for socket, other for lamp cord) accordingly. If the carpet is already in there, you can cut the holes yourself and thread the wire through and have someone at the other end grab it.

Paint the cable the same colour as the carpet?:) There isn't much you can do
Alternatives are
1. run an extension under the carpet or floor boards to underneath the sofa and plug the lights into that.
2. Buy overhead lights on a lighting track an have a remote to switch them.
3. There is a Cable cover meant to stop people tripping and is used in offices but that is usually an ugly black rubber.
4 Use low voltage lights (12 volt typical) The much thinner wire. may enable you to thread them under the carpet

I have the same problem, with my "L" shaped sectional couch. I ran my lamp cord under the couch with an extention cord to the nearest outlet against the wall. If you can't do that, I would run the wire against and then under the table, and then put a nice runner accent rug over the cord:) Just be careful that the cord is in good shape and not frayed or anything so you won't create a fire hazzard, and check it occassionally if you have a lot of traffic over it.
Good Luck!!

Have an outlet installed where you want the lamps. Don't just run the cord under the carpet. It's very dangerous! The rug can cause the cord to fray or break down, which increases the possibility of fire. unseen damage to the cord, eventually leading to a fire!
Every time the place where the cord is located is stepped on or vacuumed over, the danger of break down of the cord increases.

How about a lamp that runs on a battery? Or, if at all possible, can you have an outlet put in the floor where you would put the lamp?

you could take a putty knife and push the wire between the the wall and the carpet and know one would be able to see it
