Judas has been much misunderstood. He did not sell out. He was trying to force Jesus' hand into declaring Himself King. Jesus will then overthrow the hated Roman ruler-ship over the Jews. He was the only one of the disciples who understood that Jesus was not planning on setting-up an earthly kingdom. So, if he engineered the situation correctly, Jesus would be forced to declare Himself king. When Jesus did not do that, Judas realized his mistake by declaring, "I have betrayed innocent blood".

I've always thought that he was actually trying to force the hand of Jesus to act in a miraculous way, thus forcing the Pharisees to recognize him as the Messiah. But I'm an Atheist, what do I know?
