I think if it has spiritual and personal meaning for the person wearing it, that's wonderful.

I feel the same way about crosses, crucifixes, holy medals, the Star of David, and any other symbol that someone wears to express their faith.

Hello everyone!
I red the other answers to the question and I think I have a responsability now to explain why I wear the scarf. Yes, I'm a muslim :) I will have to contradict you because most of muslim girls are not forced nor oppressed. The scarf is for muslims a symbol of modesty and who covers herself she does it to accomplish what God asked us to do. I choosed to cover myself after I converted to Islam and I found out more about my religion. It needs an open heart to understand the purpose of covering your body and in any case I don't feel I lost my beauty. I only keep it for my husband who adores me :) I know that the media is making the wrong image of the muslim woman and Islam generally. I only wanted to say I'm a muslim girl who choosed to wear the scarf for herself and I'm not oppressed at all :))
Peace to all!

I think the scarfs are quite beautiful and Muslin women look very nice...but to have to wear them all the time makes no sense to me. They have got to be hot and uncomfortable...why can't they just wear them to worship..now that I think about it...I have never seen Muslim women in a mosque,,,I have only seen men..do women get to attend those beautiful buildings or are they just for the men? When they show them worshiping on TV,,,it is always a whole group of men....never women..

Yes I think the head scarf is respectful and beautiful. Modestly is a good thing, a woman who dresses modestly is following God's commandment and is saving herself from lustful glances. And it is very elegant and feminine.

Read "The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf" by Mohja Kahf. It was excellent, opened my mind to being more accepting of it. I think its a wonderful religious symbol and an appropriate way of having modesty more in our much to sexualized culture here in the US

I'm a white agnostic Australian. I teach English to migrants, many of them Muslim. I don't object to head scarves, especially if they are attractively coloured and patterned. My students often look graceful and elegant in their scarves.

However I don't like to see women with their entire face covered, and I strongly reject the ideology behind the requirement for women to cover their faces.

But I don't treat them differently!

I also hate to see women covered head to toe in black robes, as though there were something shameful about them.

That said, there are undercurrents of misogyny and sexual hypocrisy in non-Muslim cultures too. When I was growing up I was taught by women covered head to toe in black robes: Catholic nuns.

I know alot of muslim girls who wear the scarf on their head but their face is still showing (hajab) and they said it was thier choice to wear it and they were not forced to...those are direct words from some muslim girls i know...i know some that dont wear a scarf either and that was thier choice too...i think we shouldnt judge them if they choose to wear it...it's their religion/culture and they are not bothering anyone so let them be. It's better than all the half naked girls walking around who could easily get mistaken for hookers.

in my personal opion yes, when you think a bout it now days most women ware alot of provocative clothing's and people get the wrong interpretation of there dress code, so yes the Muslim scarf is a wonderful concept, its well respected, and its shows that you have guts, and if you wearer one don't stop because of what people have to say, and all of that other stuff

The concept of modesty is great. But when it is forced onto others the whole religion falls apart. There is no compulsion in religion.

I do if it is worn willingly and out of devotion to one's religion. I understand this is not always the case over there.
