Just a few questions about contact lenses:

1. Are they expensive? How much would they cost for a year? Both the king you remove every night and the gas-permeable type.

2. How long can they be worn? I've read 6 hours but that seems a little low.

3. Do I have to have a pair of glasses or is that just optional if my vision is otherwise "good enough" to get around the house?

4. Can I swim with contacts (wearing goggles of course) or should they be removed for that?

*Sorry to have so many questions in one. I hope that's not cheating!

well first you have to get a contact lens exam that generally runs between 90 and 115 dollars, then since you have never worn them you will have to be trained from your eye doctor how to take them out, put them in, and take care of them. when you first get them you have to wear them only a few hours a week till your eyes are used to them, no more than 8 hours in the first week.. disposable lenses start at about 30 dollars a box so about 240 for a year hard ones start at about 120 for each lens so they are about the same price for a years worth. soft ones are alot more comfortable though. and its best to have a pair of glassses cause sometimes your eyes hurt from wearing cl lenses to much, and you can get infections. i swim my mine in i do everything with mine in.. hope i answered your questions.

1. It will cost you more than glasses in most cases. Just how much more depends on what you wear. Most people consider the extra cost very worth the convenience it provides.

2. At least 8 hours. Most people can tolerate them for well over 12 hours. It depends on individual. You CAN wear extended wear lenses overnight, but it is suggested, you'd remove them and clean. The lenses last longer that way, and better for eyes. Some people are not bothered by this, but again, it depends on individual.

3. You MUST have a pair of glasses also. When you take them off at night, or if you get infections or irritations, you will have to revert back to glasses until the problem is resolved.

4. Yes. If you are going to do that though, I'd suggest weekly replacable or even daily replacable. (disposable). The pool chemical will get into the lense and make it less comfortable. I swim a lot. I wear daily disposable for this very reason. They are more expensive, but much more comfortable and no need to buy the cleaning solutions.

I have soft contact lenses that I wear a month at a time and then throw away. The exam is $100 per year. The lenses are $40/pr. You can take them out after a couple weeks if you want to give your eyes a break over night or for a day or two to wear glasses - it is purely optional and then put them back in. You can swim in them using goggles or purchase goggles in your script now available at such stores like Walmart! Depending on your vision plan, do the math and the type of contacts you want -- daily wear, extended wear, and it is not bad to have your unobstructed vision back again.

Hey no worries it's all good. I've been wearing contacts for 12 years now. I wear mine 8-12 hours a day. No matter what they tell you DON'T SLEEP IN THEM!

I would suggest you wear the disposable kind that you replace every two weeks. They range from $16-$30 a box and have maybe six lenses in each box. Always keep a pair of glasses on hand. If your eyes become too irritated for contacts or you run out you will need to have them to see.

You can swim in your contact lenses but you risk them washing out of your eyes. I wear mine and just close my eyes or use goggles. All and all I think they are worth it so go for it!

cost vary alot with contacts, for example toric lens (made to fit abnormal eyes or a astigmatism) cost twice as much as standard lens.
These are prices at the optical I work for
.
acuvue2(most popular) are 39.50 for a 3 month supply
Colors are 64.00

Acuvue advance astigmatism cost 80.00 for 3 months

gas perms are the way to go if you can stand to wear them
they run about 250.00 but if you take care of them you can wear them longer than a year more if your vision doesn,t change. the thing with gas perms is you have to build up your wear time. you start out with 2hrs and add an hr every few days. they do kinda hurt i can't wear them myself .

As for the wear time on daily wear c.l. you can wear them all day or until your eyes want them out lol
BUT I can't stress this enough don't sleep in them and dispose of them according to schedule usually every two weeks . not doing so may not effect you at first but it will catch up with you at some point . they do make c.l. that can be worn for 30 days and nights w/o having to take the out. They are more expensive but if you just have to sleep in them invest because you only have one set of eyes.

backup glasses are a must as far as i am concerned. If you get an eye infection you can't wear c.l. If you lose a contact on vaction it can be a pain to get another one.

The rule is no c.l. in the pool because of cholorine and other things but i wear mine with care.If you wear goggles i think your fine

I love my contacts and have tried every brand I can get ahold of. Talk to your eye care provider and listen too. Also last piece of advice once you have your RX go online or to 1800 contacts to save yourself even more money.

I hope this was some help. GOOD LUCK & ENJOY
