This is a complex question without a simple answer. First of all, it is possible to be born into a family with psychiatric illness and still come out all right. Some children actually grow up caring for their parents and become caring adults. Some copy the maladaptive behavior they see. Some parents with psychiatric illness hide their problems from their children and some do not. Some psychiatric illnesses have genetic components of varying strengths and others do not. Some children have predispositions toward mental illness because of perinatal environment which has nothing to do with genetics. Overall, life is a crap shoot. Psychologists have basically ascribed about 25% of the determination of someone's life to genetics, 25% to environmental influences, including the environment parents afford their children, which leaves 50% to other random factors. As Dumbledore (from Harry Potter) says, however, what becomes of your life depends upon the choices you make.

This is a big yes. How do I know? I work with children who have behavior problems and have seen how the parents parent the kids. Also some of the parents are developmentally delayed as well so it is as if a child is raising a child.

Absolutely!! A child's actions and behaviors are shaped by their parents. If the parents are emotionally and mentally healthy people they will raise emotionally and mentally healthy children. If the parents are dysfunctional so will their children. Environment has a lot to do with shaping a child.

My daughter has behavioral problems we have treated for years so I can answer this by experience.

One of the most painful parts of seeking treatment for her was to have to look at ourselves and see some of the things we do and how it affects her behavior. We had to change things about ourselves.

It is not that I believe we are totally responsible for her behavior. If you are passive aggressive, however, your children will learn that behavior. We had to learn positive ways to express what we were feeling and deal with problems.

On the up side, this has helped us in our marriage and other relationships. However, we wanted to change. That is a huge part of it.

Everything in this life is stress-diathesis. Someone might have the genetic predisposition for skin cancer, but if they are careful and avoid the sun's rays they may never develop it.

All people have varying degrees of predisposition towards any illness, mental or otherwise, but their environment and the circumstances it provides will either aid or degrade the condition and as soon as functionality is impacted then there is a problem.

i think it does...children do tend to grasp a lot of stuff when they are in the wombs and ancient Indian literature and works of science do confirm this fact and that, i believe, is the reason that carrying women get the highest privileges. Women must take care of their physical and mental health to ensure the well being of the child. One interesting scientific proof would be the Abhimanyu effect - a new born child tends to stop crying if he/she is made to listen to the mother's heart beat...interesting...the relation between mom and child.

Sometimes. Mistreated children tend to have problems whether they act them out or hide them within. Mentally unhealthy parents do tend to either inflict or instill their problems on their kids. Mentally unhealthy, however, is relative. No one is perfect and everyone has issues.

No absolutely not. BEHAVIOURAL conditions and disorders are determined by the individual, they aren't genetically inherited.

However, NON-behavioural conditions CAN.
