Needs a new fuel pump, the pump is electric and in the gas tank, after it runs for awhile it overheats and shuts off, after about 5-10 minutes it will cool down enough the car will start again and run a bit more. This is common on vehicle this age.

It sounds like you have an electrical problem but it might not be that hard to fix. If you have a Chiltons or Haynes find the electrical section and trace each ground. Clean each and every ground connection.

If you don't have one of these books start at the battery and clean the negative post. Follow the ground cable to the block, take it off, clean it, and reinstall. Now look for the cable that goes from the block to the body and clean both ends of that.

There might be one from the frame to the block, or from the transmission to the frame so climb under and look for that one too.

The theroy here is that once you heat up you are losing an electrical connection and that that is causing you to lose power to the fuel pump. Which leads us to your last check. The pump should only have one wire running to it, unless it is mounted in the tank, and the body of the pump should be the ground. Take the pump off and clean where it contacts the frame.

If this doesn't work replace the battery. I know that the battery is starting the truck but that is not to say that you don't have a short in it. If you have another car try to run it with the battery and see if it starts to have the same problems. I have seen batteries that would take a slow charge but when connected to the car would short out under the strain of the charging system.

Hi,I would check the fuel pump pressure and the fuel filter. The fuel filter may have a build up of crape in it.I was going to tell you to check your coil, but you say you changed it.Some time they heat up and open ,then cool down and work for a time.

My guess would be most likely an ignition module. Other then that it may also be a fuel pump. Check spark and fuel pressure next time it does it.

well you need to hook up a fuel pressure tester as soon as it dies but it really sounds like and ignition module going bad on you, especially since it only runs for so long
