My dad doesn't have a middle name, nor does his sister. On the other hand, my little sister has two middle names... maybe my dad was trying to make up for the fact that he didn't get one. Ha! Ha! :-)

I can only answer for the United States, but by World War II, a middle name was so common that if a soldier didn't have one, the letters "NMI"* would be written where a middle initial would be. Most contemporary US government forms certainly have a space that requires a middle name or initial.

------
*NMI stands for "no middle initial".

I consider it normal. I do not have a middle name and my sister has only a middle initial but no middle name.

It's kind of common. I mean, some people's name is Mary
Beth, (that's their first name) and they don't have a middle name, so it just doesn't matter!!! I hope that helps!!!
