I want to get a tattoo, but I'm not sure of what to get. I want something that I won't regret having on my body, and I want something that's meaningful to me...Is there like any special way to determine what a person should get? Like a check-list pros-cons list I should make? I want something pretty that I love, but I also want something sentimental...Does anybody have any good ideas?

I have answered questions like this before - it is hard to decide what you want when you know it will be there forever as you obviously do. What I did for my first one was I drew it out, stuck it beside my bed where I'd see it every morning and every night and gave it 6 months to see if I was interested still. That worked fine for me and I have no regrets 25 years later. Make a gallery and add and edit as time goes by. Give it 6 months and see what's still there - and more importantly - what you have put aside. I hope this helps.

Good that you're thinking about it and not just charging in. I'm pretty pro-ink, but I do dislike all of the tattoos gotten just to be cool. A tattoo should be something personal, done for yourself and not for the acceptance of others.

My personal preferences are something like this:

If it's something I'm planning on getting, I ponder on the specifics for at least a few months. I'll take the sketch made by the artist and put it up on my wall and look at it every day to make sure I'm going to want to see it.

Personally, I like multiple meanings embedded within the tattoo. A koi by itself may mean one thing, but if I throw in additional elements or make it part of a larger piece, I can say even more with the image.

I favor symbolism that is ambiguous to the casual viewer but obvious to me. I'm not getting it for them, after all, and little tweaks to keep them off their toes is fun. A little bit of the esoteric goes a long way.

I don't want to directly represent whatever I'm "telling" with the tattoo. That's a personal thing - others will feel different.

Probably a few others, but these are the general ones.

You should think really really hard about what you want.. For instance, something that has meaning to you, a turning point in your life, a symbol you. I want my first tattoo to be the 3 stars and the sun of the Filipino flag w/ my last name in the middle of the sun on my back.. It's meaningful to me. And, if it's something thats meaningful to you, don't worry about what other people think.. Just think about how you're going to feel about it a little while down the road... But you might want to be prepared to tell a story about it.. =]

Without knowing anything about you, answering your question is very difficult. I would have to have more info. Take the design you like and put it up where you will see it very frequently. If you are not sick of the design after a month, get the tattoo.

Well whatever you do, don't get a tatoo that could be visible in the workplace, you probably wouldn't get hired if you look unprofessional. Id say if you were to get a tatoo, get one on your lower stomach, or maybe on your foot or so. And don't get a heart with a vine dangling, or anything like that, everybody seems to have one of those.

a waitress i work with has a tatoo on her ankle; its a greek celtic knot of motherhood... maybe if your a mom... you could get something like that... or something that deals with your nationality/religion...and dont get its somewhere too visible... your back, upper shoulders, stomach region are acceptable in the business world, just as long as they can be covered
