i got windows vista and my files are gone?

i just got windows vista and when it was done all of my files are gone can i get them back or what

If you let windows FORMAT the drive, they are long gone.

If you did an "over the top" upgrade, try searching the hard drive for a known file name see if they are still hiding in an "old documents" folder or something.

If it was going to FORMAT it should have warned you first.

Also they always advise backing up data files before major operating systems changes.
