Why was 'East India Company' named so, when there was no West India or 'West India Company' at that point of time?

Because India is east of England .

because at that time there was a confusion to where india was..u must b knowing how columbus mistook some american islands to b india and that they were named West Indies later on..mayb dats y the companies were named East India Company..

East India resident would be??Indian
Not the same as Indian in North America; is it?(so were designated west indians)

There was a mystique about the East. "The East" represented fortune, mystery and the exotic. Hence, the reason they went with East.
