I'm curious of the breakdown of what dogs people own on Answers. So, here's my poll. There are seven categories for dogs, based on their popularity and if they're purebred.
Write how many dogs in each category you own. Please put your poll answer at the top of your answer. If you want to say more about your dogs, please do so after the poll results. For example:
Most Popular Breed: 2
Mixed Breed with Unknown History: 1
Here we go. There are seven categories:
1. Most Popular Breed
2. Very Popular Breed
3. Slightly Popular Breed
4. Less Well-Known Breed
5. Rare Breed
6. Mixed Breed with Known History
7. Mixed Breed with Unknown History
The first four categories are defined below. Basically all AKC breeds, based on popularity and registration stats. I've also added the American Pit Bull Terrier since that's a popular breed without being AKC-registered. It's in the same category as the AmStaff. Rare breeds are any purebreds not listed.

If you have a mixed breed that you know what all its parents are, use Mixed Breed with Known History. This is for accidental breedings and “designer dogs.” For all other mixed breeds whose history is a guess, use Mixed Breed with Unknown History.

Very Popular Breed-1
I have an 8 month old Shiba Inu. It is listed in your question as a very popular breed, however in my area I would consider it a less well known breed because 1 in 25 people have ever heard of the breed and less than that can identify the breed when seeing them. We have seen 1 other Shiba puppy in our area (we take her to Petsmart, Pet Supplies Plus and/or the dog park every weekend.

I own three dogs from the most popular list.
Australian Shepherd, Pom, Yorkie.
All are spayed and neutered.
In my life, I have owned a variety of mixed breeds and purebred dogs. I overwhelmingly prefer the purebreds, although the most intelligent and responsive dog I've ever owned was a cross between a German Shorthair Pointer and something that happened along.

Nope tspencer- a peekapoo is not a breed you have 6. mixed breed with known history. It is a pekingese and poodle mix.
Sara- the AKC changed the name of the jack russell terrier to the parson russell terrier- so you have 2. A very popular breed.

If they all bred "rare" breeds, they would cease to be rare and would become "popular"... the problem is your circular definition. And the reasons are many why one breed is more in demand than others: First off, some dogs are more suitable for more homes. The Labrador Retriever is versatile and relatively easy to care for - the Alaskan Malamute is neither of those things. Second, the public is more aware of some breeds (self-perpetuating, but also due to media, tv, movies, etc). No one without a vast knowledge of dogs wakes up in the morning and says "I would like a Puli" but any idiot in the US knows enough to wake up in the morning with the breed name "Dalmatian" or "Golden Retriever" or "Chihuahua". Third, some breeds are newcomers to the US. The Dutch Shepherd, for example, or the Belgian Laekenois, or the Black Russian Terrier. It takes TIME to build up a population and to give them the exposure necessary so that they are in demand. Finally, good for the rare breeds! The "popular" breeds are killed by thousands in shelters, and bred until they die in puppy mills. The "hard to find" breeds are carefully cared for so that a puppy miller doesn't get enough to start a breeding population purely for profit. CORRECT and well-bred dogs are relatively rare in all breeds, but as a proportion, they are much rarer in the "popular" breeds. People ARE breeding Itanian Spinone - they are just doing it carefully and correctly. Unless you want to see Spinone dying in shelters or in the news from a puppy mill bust, you can accept that it's worth it to take the time and energy to find one of the reputable breeders producing a good one.

I have a Jack Russel Terrier, and as far as I'm concerned that breed of dog isn't listed anywhere, so I do not know what category to place.
