As the war expands they will need more troops. Volunteers are not reaching the "goal numbers" that they need. Hey, who knows, maybe the 5 Romney sons will get drafted, go over there with guns a blazin' and save the day !

This country is pretty cool. You can get an education, and, unless you go to some religious "school," you aren't told what to learn. You can go to any church or whatever, and practice religion in whatever way you want.... as long as it doesn't include human sacrifice. You can work at any job for which you are qualified... and you can succeed or fail at it as you choose. You can vote any way you wish, or not vote at all. You can say ptetty much what you want. If you're really stupid, the government will come to your rescue.
I think if the government needs our support, and we're too selfish to give it, in spite of all that the country has given us, why shouldn't the government be able to say, "Sorry, you've been sponging off this country for 18-20 years. Time to pay the piper. The price is 4 years active duty and 2 years reserve... as a minimum."
"But," whine the red, white, and blue-blooded so-called Americans,"you can't tell me what to do. This is a free country." Want it to stay free? Then join the military and defend those freedoms.
"But," whine the malcontents, "we don't like... (whatever). Why should we be forced to support it?" Because of all the stuff that is available in this country that you do like. When you popped out of your mom, you weren't guaranteed happiness. You were only guaranteed the right to pursue happiness."
"But," whine the protesters, "we should stop meddling in other countries' affairs." You need to go back to school. As recently as 150 years ago, the world was a pretty large place. If you wanted to attack another country, it would take you weeks... even months... go get set up for the invasion. Today, you can attack with a button.... ok, a few switches and a couple of keys. While it used to take weeks to go around the world, today it can be done in a few hours. Half way around the world is now next door. The world is no longer a bunch or isolated countries. We're now a global community. And when one of our neighbors needs help, like a good neighbor in the global community, we try to help. When one of the neighbors gets a little out of line and endangers others in the neighborhood, we try to protect the general population at the expense of the errant neighbor. That's what good citizens in the world community do... they help each other.
"But," whine the isolationists, "we're not the world's police force." Somebody has to do it. The UN is useless. There are permanent members of the Security Council that are some of the worst neighbors in the community. Expecting the UN to police the world is like asking the fox to protect the chickens. They tried it in Korea and almost 60 years later we're still getting fallout from it. Acting like a cop is a tough job. Nobody particularly likes you. They want to be protected from the other guy, but they aren't too thrilled when the cop protects the other guy too. The cop is either over zealous, or he's not acting quickly and decisively enough. It's always too much too soon, or to little too late. And it's seldom right. The foxes want the job. They REALLY want to watch the chicken coop--they don't care about the heat. Nobody else wants the job--they don't want the heat. So, to prevent the foxes from getting to the chickens, the US steps in. Not something we like to do. It costs money. It costs lives. And we have to take the heat. We take the heat from the foxes. We take the heat from the chickens. But we do the job.
And every citizen of this country has an obligation help the country do that job. If some don't want to, if they don't like it, that's their problem. You were never promised happiness. If you want to keep the right to pursue it, defend it.
I think it's about time we had a draft. We had one when I was young enough to join. We had one when my father was old enough to join. We had one when my grandfather was old enough to join. And society and the economy survived... even prospered. But we have anti-military wimps in congress who are afraid to push for a draft in an election year. It has nothing to do whether it's right or wrong... their only concern is getting reelected.

Military draft is always an option, in worst case scenarios. Right now, our troops are streched thin by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as maintaining military bases all around the world. If we entered another conflict, we would have to draft so that there were enough troops. This isn't likely to happen unless another country attacks us, which itself isn't likely to happen because of our nuclear arsenal.

The talk of a draft has been going around since we started taking the fight to the terrorist. I would not worry much about it.
Oh, and if it does come to a draft, I did not vote for Bush will not be a valid argument. Might as well get you plane tickets to Canada now.

I personally don't think it ought yo be an "option", IMHO
Oh, and Carla is wrong on this "There are some exceptions to being drafted or ways to avoid being drafted.conscientious objectors "
WHAT "conscientious objector" means is that you may serve some support role in the states but it won't get you out of being drafted.

draft is a way of bringing back people to serve in the armed forces, even if they oppose it. There are some exceptions to being drafted or ways to avoid being drafted.conscientious objectors . are those who believe war is wrong. you may be excluded sometimes by age, health reasons, colorblindedness, being flat footed, marital status. or having a sibling who has died recently in a recent war. and poor vision and not being able to read and write.

As a Nam era vet who actually worked with draftees I have always opposed conscription. Modern warfare is too complex and demanding to entrust to people who care nothing about their mission, their fellow troops, or their country. There are slackers even in today's all volunteer force, how many more will there be when you started sending in the unwilling?

What? Did you think it would never happen? I was drafted in the 60s. You're not going to like it. And now they will take the girls too.

Not going to happen. Whether or not we need a draft is debateable. But in either case, our president has already said he won't allow it. (You know, the president who doesn't listen to the people because he's SUPPOSEDLY listening to military leaders.....)
