I am at a cross roads. My dilemma is this. I am single, with no children. Presently, I live in a small, economically depresses city called Danville, Virginia. Check it out in Wikipedia. I work for the federal government (law enforcement). I have a Bachelor’s Degree, and currently pursing a Masters Degree in Emergency Management. The house that I live in is owned by my Aunt who is going to sell it; however, she is giving me first opportunity to buy. The problem is I do not want to get stuck here. I have applied for another federal job in Los Angeles, and stand a good chance of getting it. Should I try to buy this house, or just move even though I have not heard about the LA job yet? By the way, I am looking at the Long Beach area.

good question, even though property values are slightly down, reality is they will shoot back up here in LA..like you said, do you want to be stuck in virginia?...there is much more opportunity out here, and try to purchase now, its a buyers market, you will make easy money on your home within 2 years..law enforcement is always needed out here..you definitely are at the "crossroads" in your life...hope to see ya out here....good luck

Well if you don't like where you're living at now, then dont buy your house. You wouldn't wanna get stuck there so why buy the house? Yeah just move in to LA even though you haven't heard about the LA job yet. You've got great opportunities here in LA and higher rates. California is a great place and the weather is freakin' awesome so why dont you give it a try? You'll love it here and theres no doubt. You'll love everything about California. It's time to try new stuff buddy. Good luck and hope you make up your mind. ;)

Well, if I could afford it, taxes, upkeep and all, I would buy the house whether I planned to live there or not. "It's the land, Katie Scarlett!" If you can't afford the extra expense, then I would say just find another place to live until you hear from the LA job. Even if you don't get the job in LA, something else will come along for a BA working in law enforcement (for the Feds, no less).

It is true that you earn more in the city but life standard is higher too. The rent is expensive as well as other cost. If you get good discount from your Aunt´s house and have enough savings then you can afford to pay her when you get a job in CA but go to CA if you are very sure of having a good job there. When your job search in CA is solved maybe you can find somebody to rent that house to pay the monthly mortgage. God Bless!

Unless your Aunt is offering a significant discount on the house, I'd definately move.
The big city offers a better selection of night life and younger crowd. It's alot easier to meet people in the city.
Ideally, you want to just buy the house as an investment and move to the city.

If you're not happy now then why would you buy the house from your aunt? Then you will still be miserable and be stuck with a house you dont want. Follow what you want...if cali is where you want to be then go for it or you might regret it later...just make sure you have enough saved in the bank incase cali doesnt work out for you. Good luck :)

cervantes, Ask your Aunt if she can hold her horses a little while on the house sale until you flesh out your job plans. You used to live in Long Beach so you know what you are getting into. I really doubt someone with your background is going to have a hard time finding a job in L.A.

I'd buy the house and rent it out. Then, move to CA and see how thing so. California isn't for everyone, and you may end up hating it. Then you'll always have a place to fall back on.
