Well I never thought of that but that sounds very logical, there are a lot of French influences in the south.

Many Southern families "pass down" names, traditionally naming children after grandparents, etc. Lots of times, the person the child is named for is still living. To avoid confusion, the family calls the younger one Billy Bob instead of just Billy, so when speaking about the younger, you say Billy Bob, and when speaking about the elder, you say Billy. Billy Bob's legal name would be William Robert, shortened to Billy Bob.
