I had surgery on my knee when I was 12 to remove a small foreign object (a sewing machine needle) from the soft tissue next to my knee cap. I am considering enlisting now and would like to know how likely it is this will cause a problem in my enlistment process.

Depends on the branch. I had major knee surgery on BOTH knees prior to enlisting in the Navy. Both the Army and the Marines said no right off the bat. The Air Force said I had to have the screws taken out of my knees BEFORE they would allow me to enlist at my own expense.
The Navy said they would look at situations like mine on a case by case situation. I had to go through lots of extra tests before being accepted, but I did get in, and my surgeries were far more serious than yours. Good luck getting in.

As you enlist, you go for a final physical. IF you can pass that then you're golden! If not, they evaluate your problem and what medically can be done about it. It's doubtful that they would allow you to proceed, because if you couldn't get through their physical then you surely can't get through basic training.

it depends, if you could run perfectly, if you had NO PROBLEMS AT ALL doing everything normally such as running jumping, etc. then most likely you will be able to still join.

i suggest you calling a recruiter and ask them, if you have problems running, sitting, etc. then i'm sure you will not be able to join at all.

It sounds like minor surgery. If you have no symptoms, such as loss of range of motion or pain, then it will not disqualify you.
