It's delicious. I cook/eat these most of the time.

Definitely try:

Stewed Pig's Feet
Fried Chitterlings
Boiled Pork Neck bones w/ mustard greens
Fried chicken covered in flour batter
Stir-fried Collard Greens
Stir-fried Cabbage
Cornbread

Recipe for Pig's Feet:

5 cups water
4 pig's feet
2 medium onions - chopped
1 garlic clove - minced
2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Clean pig's feet thoroughly. Place all ingredients in a pot.
Cover with water. Bring to a boil. Lower heat. Cover pot.
Simmer over low heat for 2 hours, or until meat fall off the bones.

Other recipes could easily be found on the web...

Fried or baked Chicken or fish. Macaroni and cheese, collard greens, cornbread, candied yams, black-eyed-peas, mashed potatoes w/gravy, peach cobbler or sweet potato pie. Try as much as you can. Soul food is the best food on the planet!

soul food to me, is what I as a "white" girl call comfort food. I cook what is traditionally called soul food and we just call it dinner. Some of my favorites are fried chicken, pinto beans, greens, fried potatoes, and cornbread. For dessert, add some kind of cobbler.
Mexican "soul food" to me would be refried beans and tortillas.

Oh girl!!!!!!!! soul food is amazing, it's just the best tasting food ever, in my opinion. Here are some of the HAVE TO things you must try:

SOUL FOOD (COLLARDS, KALE, MUSTARD AND
TURNIPS)

1/2 lb. salt pork or 2 sm. ham hocks
Salt
3 or 4 bunches of greens (collards, kale, mustard, turnips
2 qts. water

Put salt pork or ham hocks in large pot with water, add salt and bring to a boil. Simmer for 1 hour. Wash greens thoroughly, cut into pieces and add to simmering meat. Cook until tender.
For a real SOUL MEAL, serve with candied Yams, Pickled Beets (with vinegar on the side), and Corn Bread.)

DEPRESSION DAY - SOUL FOOD

1/4 lb. fried hamburger
1/4 lb. fried bacon
1/2 c. onion, chopped
1 (15 oz.) can pork & beans
1 (15 oz.) can dark kidney beans
1 (15 oz.) can butter (or lima) beans
1 (15 oz.) can stewed tomatoes
1/2 c. catsup
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. mustard
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. vinegar

Brown bacon and onion. Add hamburger. Drain ALL canned goods. Add all remaining ingredients together with beef and onions in baking dish. Mix well. Bake uncovered at 300 degrees for 1 1/2 hours or in a crock pot at low setting 6 hours. (10 x 10 inch square pan.)

BLACK EYE PEAS

1 lb. smoke pig tails
1 lb. bag black eye peas
1 1/2 c. chopped onion
1 c. chopped green pepper
1/2 c. butter
1/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper
Salt to taste

In a large pot add 1 quart of water. Boil until tender the pig tails. If water boils out add more, then add black eye peas. When peas are halfway done saute onions and green peppers then add them to the pot. Cook until peas are soft, mix flour and 1/2 cup of juices from the pot, then pour back into pot and add butter.

SWEET POTATO PIE

2 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes
2 tablespoons melted butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup sugar
1/3 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup cream
2 tablespoons brandy (optional)
1 unbaked pie shell

Preheat oven to 450°F.
Prick pie shell dough with fork before baking. Bake for about 10 minutes without filling.

Combine all ingredients in any order. Mix well with an electric hand mixer until all ingredients are smooth.

Pour filling into precooked pie shell and put into oven on 450 degrees for 10 minutes. Then reduce heat to 350 degrees and continue cooking for 35 minutes.

Serve warm with whipped topping or ice cream. Can also serve warm.
