We are having a BBQ with some close friends... only 20 people... we are happy to provide the meat, chips, and some beer and wine (not enough for 20 people to get drunk, but enough to have a couple drinks)... but we would like to "suggest" the guests bring something like a salad, side dish or desert of their choice, and not assign or "tell" them they HAVE to bring something. How can I word that on an invite?
Or do I just put RSVP on the bottom and when the call me, I just hope they ask if they can bring something and plan on providing all the food?
P.S. Also, should we put BYOB if they want more than a couple drinks?
Thanks!

I say keep it light and funny. Like "Summer's here! BBQ at our place! We've got the meat, chips, and some drinks. BYOB if you don't like *foo*! It's a neighborhood potluck, so bring your favorite side dish! There will be a contest for best side voted on by your peers, so be creative! The winner gets a bottle of *foo* wine courtesy of your hosts! Have fun and can't wait to see you!"
Something like that. Keep it light and fun, that's what a BBQ is after all!

I have never had a BBQ where people that were invited didn't ask "Can I bring something?". Granted maybe not everybody will do this, but for those who do, feel free to give them an "assignment". You can keep track of what everyone is bringing and won't end up with four bowls of potato salad and no dessert. If someone has a problem making what you ask, they will certainly speak up. A BBQ is pretty informal. You can always send someone to the store for more beer.

I think it's perfectly okay to tell them right off that this is a pot-luck BBQ. Also it's a good idea to help guests plan what to bring, or else everyone brings potato salad and all you have is potato salad. 8^) If you're using written invitations you can put that in the invitation and say 'Call or e-mail me so I can coordinate dishes.' With 20 people it could work out pretty well.
'BYOB' is also totally acceptable on an invitation!

make it a pot luck dinner! Tell them it is a pot luck BBQ and it would be great if every one could bring in a small dish. If I got an invite like that I know I would be glad to bring in a dish, so Im sure everyone wont mind! Since you are the hostess though, I would suggest that you supply the drinks. Good Luck and have fun!

if the friends you are inviting are your close friends you should have no problem just asking them if they can bring a dish....if they dont want to or cant bring a dish than perhaps they can bring a beverage inlou of a side dish..bbq's are pretty casual unless your inviting your boss or inlaws...in which case i suggest you pick up the entire tab..

The greatest gift I have ever been given is from a man I never met You need to laugh, to keep on living and it sure ain't over yet Write down what you need to say So others will see your thoughts Enjoy your Keystone everyday and eat lots of sausage and brats Love and compassion is what is shown from that man I never met My heart without him feels so alone and the tears make my face wet Even though he is not here I still sit here and laugh And whilst I gulp on my Keystone beer I think, man...that guy needs a bath! I could go on, but I do not write well For the right words are hard to come And as I sit here, my heart does swell For without him, I feel numb

I have plenty of BBQ's and ALWAYS have my guests bring something. Start by making a list of things you need. Once you have your list call your guest and tell them what YOU want them to bring. Once they agree which most of them will, check it off the list. BBQ's are very fun and informal. Just good ole' fun times!

I'd put in the invitation: We'll cover all main dishes and wine. If you have a side dish you'd like to share feel free!

I think you should put BYOB. There is never enough and someone always ends up going to the store. Then put, "meat will be provided. Please bring a side dish." That way, they will know to bring a salad or veggie.

CAll it a BBQ Potluck, instead. Everyone will know that the food is being provided by ALL, and that this is their chance to bring the dish that they make BEST!
