Probablly from the video at the place the Money Order was purchased.
Then they get four charges:
1. Theft of the Check
2. Forgery for writing/passing the check.
3. Execution of Document by Fraud.
4. Theft by deception or Theft by Conversion (Acquiring the money order)
Thinking that one will not get caught is as stupid as committing the offense in the first place.
It's not IF but WHEN you will be caught and prosecuted.

I've never been able to buy a MO with anything but cash. They wouldn't even take my debit card. I will admit its been quite awhile since I last bought one.
To answer your question, though, it depends where they got it. It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to track that person down, and may not even be worth the effort.
I would think it would be extremely difficult for someone with a stolen check to get a MO.

Most banks will not accept ANY check from someone who is not their customer without a thumb print on the face of the check. The purpose of the thumb print is to give them a method of finding the person.
