Has anybody ever heard of a Scotch Egg? I had one in
a little (largely German populated) town and it was great.
But that was the only time and place I've ever seen or
heard of one. How do you make them?

Scotch Eggs
So fattening but so good! This recipe makes 6 Scotch eggs
6 hard-cooked eggs, well chilled
1 pound breakfast sausage
1/2 cup flour
2 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup fine bread crumbs
Vegetable oil for frying

Peel eggs and set aside. Divide sausage into 6 portions. Roll each egg in flour and with hands press a portion of the sausage around each egg.

Dip sausage-wrapped eggs into beaten eggs and roll in bread crumbs. Heat vegetable oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cook each egg in oil about 4-5 minutes or until sausage is cooked and browned. Drain on paper toweling. Serve warm.

Hard boil an egg, shell it and leave to cool.
Buy sausage meat from your grocer, and flatten it out into a round. Dip egg in flour, then wrap the sausage meat round the egg, making sure that all the egg is covered.
Dip in egg and Fish dressing, and deep fat fry until the sausage meat is cooked.
These are great for going on picnics with or just for nibbling on at any time.In Britian you can buy them in any supermarket deli counter.

I've had them and they are great!! Believe it or not, I had them in Northern Minnesota at the Timberwolf Lodge. This is how the owner explained them to me. You hard boil eggs, then you cover them with raw sausage. You put everything in the oven and bake until sausage is done. Cover with the sauce and yummy!! I'm sorry I don't have specifics, but it was about 12 years ago. Now you make me hungry for them again.

Here's a recipe I found:

Scotch Eggs

1 pound bulk pork sausage
1 tablespoon fresh parsley -- chopped
1 tablespoon grated onion
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
4 hard-cooked eggs -- shelled
1/2 cup fine dry breadcrumbs
Combine sausage, parsley, onion, cinnamon and nutmeg; mix well. Divide sausage mixture into 4 portions; shape into patties. Place one egg atop each patty, shaping the sausage mixture around egg till completely covered. Roll each sausage-covered egg in breadcrumbs. Bake in a preheated 350 degree F. oven for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Hard boil some eggs and peel them. Wrap the eggs in raw sausage (mix grated cheese in the sausage if you like) Bake in a pan til the sausage is done. Wrap the egg, sausage with a refrigerator bisquit and bake in the oven on a oiled pan until bisquits are done.

You take hard boiled eggs, form sausage around the egg and drop the egg into a deep fryer. They are a heart attack waiting to happen but they are tasty.

Cold hard boiled eggs, roll in flour, cover with breakfast sausage, pinching cracks together, it must be a solid, even covering. Dip in egg wash (egg & milk) roll in fine bread crumbs, making sure all areas are covered, fry in hot oil drain well. I made these often when my brothers were growing teens.

Yes!!! I used to make them when my family would go camping. I made them in advance and reheated them in foil over the camp fire.

Hard boiled egg (peeled)
roll in flour
form sausage around the egg
roll in flour again
dip in beaten egg
roll in bread crumbs
fry until golden and sausage is cooked through

They are delicious!!

My first one was at Brit's Pub in Minneapolis and I was in love! I hard-boil and peel the eggs, then divvy up a pound of spicy bulk sausage and wrap it around the eggs. Then dip in egg wash, then roll in bread crumbs. Then I fry them in our fryer at about 375F until they're brown and floating. I love those things. It's like breakfast in your hand.
