Well, being a collector and artist myself, after 33 years at doing what I do and admiring other artists, I've determined that I buy what I like firstly. my general rule of thumb is "does the artist have a know trasck record at auction?.....if so, thats a good indicator I'm interested, is the artist dead?.....if so, then it's another good indicator I'll buy. more than anything though I ask this....."does the artist have a really good story and associations with great stories?.....if these all come together, I'm buyin.

Only buy a piece of art work if you can't live without it. if you connect with the piece of work in a passionate way, others will most likely feel the same. Also look at the artist's other work. If their work is consistently amazing, then the artist has a highly larger chance of being well known in the future. Buying art as an investment is a very risky business. The best advice I can give is to buy your art from the heart. Want it hanging on YOUr wall, or sitting in your room, etc...

Art is a matter of taste and buying it as an investment is a risky business, unless the artist is already established, then it is more expensive.
If you have a good eye and broad taste then it is likely you'll buy something that someone will want to purchase at a later date. Best to buy something you really like or you might end up with the Emperors new clothes.

If you want to buy a painting as an investment, go to a reputable art dealer such as the Vose Galleries in Boston.

Otherwise, when I buy someone else's work I need to feel my heart throb. Many of the paintings I have purchased have, fortunately, gone up in value. Of course, I could never part with one.

Something that will not look out of place in 50yrs time. Some pictures only look in the period they were painted. Plus if you are going to hang it in your house you've got to like it!
