i have a nikon d40, and the pictures are looking great! but one thing is i really want to make my pictures pop and almost look "3 d." i've seen many pictures that photographers have that pop like this. is it a better lens that they have? or is it a flash?

Lighting is really important. When you get some light from the side you get 'modeling', the light shows off the shapes of things.

Also just about every picture you take will benefit from adjusting brightness, contrast and levels to get a full range of tones.

I think depending on what your opinion is of "pop" it matters both the lighting and the type of camera. In my photos, I like to have the model do an interesting pose, something you wouldnt think of as beautiful. For those poses, I like to center them in the photograph and see what they can offer. If they dont really know what to do, I like to have them off-center, or cropped of the photo. It looks interesting and carries the eye through the photo.
To carrie the eye, have the model use their arms to create different shapes.
Good luck.

Someone had mentions peziography, I'm not sure of the spelling, which is a method of printing the pictures that can have this effect.

might be the lighting like other people say, or you could adjust your depth of field.

Put up some links of yours and what you want yours to look like from around the web and we can help you more.
