If God doesn't exist, and if He didn't create the world in 7 days, why do we go by 7 day weeks?

Finally, proof positive. I checked my calendar to make certain.

HA HA ... very funny.
You are correct ... it was the Judaic religion and it's 'belief' that God created the world in 7 days, plus the fact that there is a 'sub-belief' that MANKIND are supposed to 'rest and contemplate/worship God on the 7th day of the week that gives us the 7 day week. But take a really GOOD LOOK at your calender. Most calenders START with Sunday, the 'Sabbath' ... and END with Saturday. What is going on with that, since when God 'created' the world, we were told to worship God on 'the 7th' day, and not the FIRST DAY.
If you were Jewish, you wouldn't 'believe in Christ' as the Messiah, and you would worship God on the 7th day ... from 'dark' on Friday evening, to 'dark' on Saturday evening ('The evening and the morning were the first day' etc.)
When Christ was crucified, it happened on a FRIDAY early in the day ... but the 'third day' when he 'rose again' was on the 'day after' the Jewish Sabbath, and it was 'early morning' ... on a SUNDAY. That caused his 'followers' to practice their 'worship' in the morning instead of the evening, and do it on a SUNDAY, which is the day of the week Christ 'rose from the dead.'
As for 'checking your calendar' to 'make certain' ... try going to any good office store ... and look at ALL of the calendars they carry. Many have BOTH DAYS of the 'weekend' at the far right side of the calendar, because people 'work' Monday through Friday in most jobs, and have the 'weekend off' ...
The calendar is different in other countries, too ... so your 'proof' is EXTREMELY LEAKY.
Okay, so you are an atheist trying to use this 'patently ridiculous proof' to show how 'silly' Christians are ...
But THAT doesn't work, because I'm a CATHOLIC ... and I have 'studied' religion, and also 'the different types of calendars' people use ... and I am not 'silly' ... in fact, I may be much more INTELLIGENT than you are. BIG DEAL. Religion isn't about 'intelligence' ... it's a matter of taking that 'leap of faith.' I can see it's just a line drawn in the sand, while from your side, you are still seeing the DEEP, WIDE CANYON. Whether you 'decide' to try to 'make that leap' is UP TO YOU ... but since we are really 'so close' let me 'whisper in your ear' ... it's SATURDAY ... the 'Jewish sabbath' and that is the 7th day when God 'created the world' ... in SYMBOLISM, anyway.

The 7 days week is the consequence of the lunaison. For 7 day, the moon goes from being full to being half full, 7 days to go from half full to new moon, and so on.
The bible was then written accordingly by primitive people who did not know anything but were unwilling to admit it.
These days, too many people believes that the bible is literally exact, to the point some argues that Pi should be 3 (and not 3.1415956535...) because a circular object is being described in it as having a circumference 3 times that of its diameter (like a cubit is an accurate unit of measure).

Richard Dawkins is right...

We use the seven day calendar because that was the one used by the Romans so many centuries ago. Many cultures throughout history have used different calendars with different amounts of days. Days are not unique things, a Saturday is just like a Sunday and a Friday is just like a Tuesday. The only difference is the name (which we also borrowed from the Roman calendar).

Well, actually this only proves that main stream society believes in God. The Gregorian calender was adopted by the Romans after they were converted to Christianity as a national religion. The seven day week means we only came up with 7 names for the days. It could have easily been more or less. Bright Blessings to you and yours!

You're pretty funny, dude.

We have a seven-day week for the simple reason that we HUMANS adopted it - the origins of that choice may have been religious, but that doesn't prove anything about "God".

It has not been the standard through all time - many different divisions of days have been used in various eras.

And anyhow, if the seven-day week is "proof" of "God", why are the days named after non-Christian Gods and Goddesses?

But thanks, this was a fun and funny pseudo-argument.

You know, humans can (and have, over the centuries) measure time in any way they devise

For example, I myself would prefer we be on a 13 month lunar calendar with 4 weeks (28 days) in every month, with the necessary addition for leap years. No more having to remember if this month has 30 or 31 days!

No. First he was resting on the 7th so it only took 6. Second that doesnt prove anything and I dont know how it could.Wasnt the use of sun dials and marking of days used long before the Bible was written? I dont think this arguement has a leg to stand on.

The proof exists only to those who believe in the proof. We will never be able to prove to anyone who refuses to believe in the Word of God, i.e., casting pearls before swine.

The 7 day week is an invention of man to help keep track of the passage of time. It is a fairly new invention, in past times people had no concept of a "week" of time. They worked most days and "weekends" and "holidays" were unknown.
