I read that for overweight people walking is better than jogging because of less sideeffects. They say that in the long run, jogging can cause damage to joints. I am an overweight person (82Kg/166cm/30years) and I have jogged for a few months without any joint problems. Now I want to know if it would be better to stop jogging. Walking is not for me..I find that boring and prefer jogging. What would you suggest? If you are experienced please share it.

Anothet doubt, even after jogging for few months, my weight has not reduced much (only 2Kgs so far). Can you suggest what else should I do about it?

Thanks for such helpful replies.
Can anybody tell if joggers/runners are more prone to joint problems in later life?

well if you've been doing it for that long without and joint problems, then I would say keep doing it. Plus if you keep jogging consistently, you probably won't stay overweight.

Many orthopedists recommend that jogging and running be postponed until you are within 10-15 pounds of your ideal body weight.
Joint wear and tear may not manifest for decades--but is a very real risk.
You can achieve similar results to jogging with brisk walking, with less risk to bone and joint health. Or, you can swim, use an elliptical trainer, or any of several other cardio options.

Keep jogging.
Many articles recommend walking for overweight because of the added weight on the joints. But if jogging is working for you keep it up.
Just remember to not increase time, distance or speed too drastically, because that could lead to injury. If you want to increase time or distance, just add ten percent. So if you're running two miles this week, just up it to 2.2 miles next week.

I would say it is probably safer for an overweight person to consult a doctor and have the professional design an exercise program for them. I know this might sound like a lame answer, but the doctor can best tell you how often and how far to jog and still be safe.

Walking actually is the best for losing weight not just for joints. When you walk 10,000 steps a day you are burning fat right out of the gate. When jogging or running you are burning carbs for quick energy.

I prefer to powerwalk personally, I'm asthmatic. When I was heavier I just did a moderate walk for about 30 minutes. Now that I am an advanced walker I powerwalk instead for about 45 minutes.
I agree, walking is boring, but usually I bring my MP3 along and listen to some tunes.

I think jogging is fine for overweight people, just don't overdo it. If you find walking boring, than i say definitely do jogging. If you are trying to lose weight than jogging is the best way to go.
Good Luck!! =D

Jogging may result in knee pains. Do it until you are comfortable. Then you can switchover to walking. Any how it is better to think of limited no. of Yogasanas which suits your body with the help of a master which will keep your body fit and will also reduce your weight.

Jogging can be harmful to your joints if you are overweight, but if you can handle it, do it.
The secret is to push your body, but listen to your body. You'll know when it can't handle it. That's when you need to stop and go for a better alternative, like stationary bike.
What you really need to do is most of your weight loss in the kitchen by conrolling yourself. If you can change the food you eat, you'll lose weight much faster than just trying to exercise it off. Exercise is important, but your diet is to blame.
