I have online protection however software problems stop it from updating. I have tried to reinstall but it fails. During the anti-virus scan it freezes and I have to reboot. I have erroneous programs on my system but are unable to remove (control panel). I have tried everything I know but I fail at every turn. My system is so sluggish that it is a chore just to navigate. I want to put a bullet into it. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try booting into safe mode and running your antivirus again. You may also want to install, check for updates and run the following antispyware applications, also in safe mode. To get to safe mode, tap or hold down the F8 key while the computer starts back up. After a few seconds a screen should appear to allow you to select safe mode. To exit safe mode, simply reboot again afterwards.

SuperAntispyware
http://superantispyware.com/
Spybot S&D (free version requires manual updating)

AVG AntiSpyware
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5
Adaware from Lavasoft (free version requires automatic updating)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after downloading and updating)

If you cannot get it removed after the above, you may want to join a tech group that specializes in providing manual instructions on malware eradication.

Hi david_brewer@att.net,

So you're having problems repairing and reinstalling your online protection, huh? I do have a solution for you, but it will involve making a DVD backup of the installation files for any other software you may have on your computer. Of course, there's always a Plan B.

The first solution is the obvious one: make a CD-ROM or DVD-R backup of the important content of your hard drive, and do a complete reformat. While this is a tried and true method, I must warn you that not all drivers and partitions are known to reappear as they did in their original state.

The second solution is to simply run the program outside of your operating system, e.g. Command Prompt. This way, none of the erroneous programs on your system, which are probably running as background tasks on your system (making them unable to be removed), can interfere with the reinstallation process.

While writing this, I happened to think of another alternative to this problem. The procedure is risky, but it's a simple fix. Using a LiveCD of a program called GParter (a link is included to the download), create a new partition and simply do a fresh install of your online protection software. From there, all that's left to do is remove your original installation and simply configure your new one as you did your original.

I hope this answers your question, david_brewer@att.net. Be sure to keep those questions coming, and I'll be sure to keep giving you answers!

Chances are your computer is already infected. Go to the companys web site you have protection with and let them do an online scan and then remove any problems that way, if the problem presists you may have to have them walk you through regedit and remove all the crap.

Try to uninstall it in control panel and try another online protection like AVG Free from Grisoft.
