I still write with a fountain pen. I have had it for many years , it was a gift from someone I loved very much. It is a solid silver "Swan" `fat` design pen, with a refill-able ink `bladder` and also has an adaptor for using ink cartridges. Writing with a fountain pen gives character to your writing.

At my primary school - if you passed the handwriting test you were given a blue ink pen, an ink pot and square of blotting paper! Then you had to start handwriting lessons with the pen, looping the o's etc!
I loved drawing in ink on the blotting paper and then pressing it to my arm to make tattoos! Always got caught though!

I can go one better than that!!
At my primary school, we had what we called "dip in - dip out pens"
A split nib attached to a stick and an ink pot set in the top right hand corner of the desk. This was filled daily by "the ink monitor" from a large bottle.
All the desks were wood and cast iron, double ones, with a bench seat which lifted up.

I remember holes being in our desktops in elementary school. I asked what they were, and was told 'ink wells'. Then, I begged my mom to get me a fountain pen and some ink--she did, but it didn't work out too well--too messy.

Yes and some blighter always put blotting paper in the ink well. The school my grandson goes to has parents to supply fountain pens. I feel are better than ballpoints to write with. I used to drive my boss mad because occasionally I would go back to the pen and (dip it in ) ink method to get my deteriorating handwriting back in order. he then discovered computors rather late in the day but would not pay for us to go on a course for a grounding. it was suprising how fast we old fellers learnt and to our satisfaction he did not

For my 9th birthday I was given a small fountain pen shaped like a pink and white umbrella (umbrella in the closed position, obviously).

You're lucky you got a fountain pen. We just had a bit of wood with a nib on the end.
Before that we had a slate and a piece of chalk.
