Hi, I'll list some guidlines that could help you:
1) Install antivirus software and keep it up-to-date.
2) Install antispyware software and keep it up-td-date.
3) Install a software firewall to prevent illigal access to your machine. (you can find software packages that contain all the mentioned softwares, ex: Norton 360)
4) Don't enter suspicious sites and don't click on untrusted banners on the net
5) Don't open mails from unknown sender even if the subject is very attractive like "congratulations you won bla bla bla.
6) Don't under any circumstances open any .exe file which was sent to you by mail even if the sender is known to you cause there are some worms which send themselves from known sender to you.

The mentioned steps could prevent you from 99% of hacking tools on the net.

You need to invest in a firewall program. Like Zone Alarm. The other thing you can do is put a router or hardware firewall like sonicwall or barracuda. The difference is the hardware firewall doesn't use your computers CPU to do the work so it keeps your computer safe without slowing it down.
