My dog has been dragging his butt on the ground pulling himself with his front paws. It looks funny, but, gross. What could be causing him to do this? Does his butt just itch, could it be worms? He is a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. Very healthy other than that, but we have had some instances of vomiting. Not very often though and that seems normal.

Many small dogs have sensitive anal glands in their behinds. These glands needed to be empited and cleaned regularly. Most dogs naturally clean them when defacating. However, small dogs can sometimes have trouble with this. If you take your dog to a vet or even groomer, they can take care of the the problem and even show you how to do it if you are brave enough to try. Sometimes they can also scoot when feces are around the area as a natural way to try and clean the area. Or like you said, they might just have an itch! The usual problem is the anal glands since it is a smaller dog.

Your dog needs his anal glands expressed- your groomer or vet can do this. Usually when a dog has a bowel movement, the glands are expressed naturally, but sometimes they are so far back from the rectum that it doesn't happen as often as it should. It's important that you take care of it because it can end up causing the dog discomfort. Note- if your dog rubs his butt on the floor and then the carpet reeks terribly, then he's managed to express the glands himself.

- Could be he needs his anal glands expressed (a vet or professional groomer can do this for you).
- Could be worms.
- Could be he just isn't clean back there or had an itch at the time and will not do it again.

If he continues to do it, take him to the vet with along with a fecal sample. They can check for worms and also express the anal glands.

It's a myth that this is probably worms. He probably needs his anal sacs expressed (drained). A dog groomer or vet can do this for a very minimal fee. My vet charged fifteen dollars to do it when my dog had this problem. Your vet can also show you how to do it in the future. I'm assuming the dog has been licking his behind too. Poor dog is only trying to open the anal sacs which are just inside his rectum. They can get clogged from time to time. It's common

Amy has given you the best answer: it relates to his anal glands. If he does it a lot, take him to a vet; he may need to have them drained. My two Cavaliers have done that on occasion (but that could mean something as minor as an itch); if I see it done quite a bit, then I know one of their glands is clogged and they need to see the vet.

Best wishes!

It could be that he needs his anal glands expressed. That is what my dog did before I took her to the vet and the glands were the problem.Take him to the vet and they will do it. It doesn't cost much. They can also test for worms if you wish.Your dog should be on heartworm prevention too.

They have glands back there that make secretions to help them go. When they get clogged it makes the drag there bottoms on the ground, in an attempt to clean them. If you have your dog professionally groom, this cleansing comes with the service.

Not 100% certain but I read somewhere that that means they have worms. Does he do it directly after going #2? If so it could be that he is trying to get excess crap off of his bottom.
