Should I make exchange in US or wait until I am in England - realize I will need some before I get there.

I would do exactly what John as said above. This would be the best way.

Once you do get here you will be able to exchange your currency at most Post Offices and travel agents. These are easy to find when you are here. Some banks may still offer currency exchange also, but I am not too sure.

You can call your local bank, its good to have some British currencies on hand before going there, maybe a couple of hundreds, and the remaining currency you can exchange when you get there.

check with your bank- or do some online research of UK travel blogs- some banks like BofA have a deal with one of the big banks in the UK so you can use their ATMs with NO FEE. We just went every day or two and withdrew enough for the next day. Sorry, I can't remember the name of the UK bank. We just spent 2 weeks there and had no troouble at all. We took no british money with us, but made our forst stop to exchange currency in the Gatwick airport.

Either way it doesn't really matter. Just keep in mind that the currence ratio is about 2:1. $2 for 1 English Pound. I think the exchange rate it like $1.89 for 1 pound.
