A LOT of us REAL SKINS STILL wear our feathers in PUBLIC. Just to piss the "dominant culture" off. To let them know WE ARE STILL HERE.

Only difference now, is we'll tie them to our ball caps, and only wear 1 braid. I don't leave my house without my feathers.

As to WHERE we live, we live EVERYWHERE. ON reservations / rancheria and in Cities. Those of us that live OFF REZ are STILL considered by the US GOVT as "RENEGADE" because we won't be "Good Indians" and stay behind the fence so the white public won't have to see us.

Senita,

Yes, many of the original tribes of Native American peoples still exist. Most of them live on government designated "Reservations", where they are provided with most of their physical needs, as a form of reparation for the horrible genocidal wars conducted against them by the United States government. Many of them, have fallen into a terrible state of existence, plagued by alcoholism, depression, and suicide. A few of the tribes, notably the Cherokee, have taken great efforts, to preserve their culture, language, and history. They regularly engage in the traditional dances and festivals of their respective tribes, wearing the traditional clothing and head dress. Quite a few of the tribes have opened gambling casinos on their reservations, which have been a mixed blessing for them. While it has brought more money into the hands of the tribes, it seems to have increased the incidence of substance abuse, and homicides. Little good ever comes from gambling. It seems like the government may have finally found a way to kill off the Natives for good, without firing a shot. Just my two cents. Peace be unto you...........

There are some tribes in Washington, and I know of some near Tuba City, Arizona. Most have been forced to live on reservations. You don't see many around. Sometimes a few have road side stands to sell the wares. They don't wear feathers, except for special times.

There are some that live near me. They don't wear feathers except when they are performing. There are places to go to see them perform in New Mexico and elsewhere (I'm sorry, I have never actually gotten to see it live myself.) Tribes have been given land that has been set aside for them (reservations). They are allowed to have casinos without many of the taxes and other regulations states would normally have to pay as a type of 'reparation' for all they have gone through. Many are still quite poor and often times they suffer from alcoholism because the white man liked to get them drunk so they could steal the land etc. And we know that often times alcoholism runs in families....so....it is quite sad. :'(

I looked up some stuff on the "Trail of Tears" I think you would find it interesting.

Um, I don't know what this has to do with religion, but.... the only times I've seen Native Americans wearing feathers is at powwows, when they dance and celebrate their heritage. There are reservations all across the US, but Native Americans can live anywhere they want just like anyone else. They live all over the country.

it sounds like you have a very uneducated view of the modern American Indian.

feathers are worn for ceremonial occassions mostly.

many live on reservations, but not all. reservations were our government's attempt to provide a place for them to live in a controlled setting that limited their movement and ended up destroying many.

reservations still exist and they are all different.

i suggest you actually research the topic yourself - - there are many, many wonderful websites.
