Do i need a high def tv to use hd-dvd or blue ray?

No, a SDTV will work. But what's the point? You should just use a standard DVD player, if you do not have an HDTV. High-def content will not look any better than SD content on a SDTV.

buy a $45 philips at walmart. great unit.
if u get an HD late the HD player price will be lower. It will be better defined as to HD or BR and for $45 u can't go wrong.
